Howdy Gang,
Is there a relay for the horn on a '85 Golf
or is it just like the aircooled VW's
power to the horn and grounds out at the horn button
I searched but found nothing after reading a lot of other stuff

Yes an 85 will have a relay. to check the system, put on the ignition and while pressing the horn pad, listen for the relay to click. If it doesn't ,check the horn button/pad first. If you do hear a click , the problem are either the horns them selves or the wiring going to them. remove the plug from one, put a test light, voltmeter or another good horn to see if you have the signal going to them.

No Click heard when pushing the horn button

Is there a list or a site showing the location of the relay?

That's the thing. if the relay doesn't click it very well could be the horn button/switch itself. Take the horn pad off,being careful not to rip the connector off the wires when you pull at it. with the 2 wires in your hand, ignition on and touch the 2 wires. check for relay clicking, if still no, remove the steering wheel,it could be the contact behind the steering wheel . make a contact between the slipper contact and the screw that is right near it.

I pulled the horn button apart
and found out that the brown wire was off the horn pressure switch
so I hooked it up and turned on the key and the horn blasted without me pushing on it.
I think the PO pulled the wire off to keep it from honking all the time
I pulled the switch apart and figure the foam was damaged/missing on the corners
and shorting out all the time
so I put some black electrical tape on the stainless steel plate
now it Toots as it should

Ha Ha, ya gotta do what ya gotta do, I'm glad you found it :lol: and as far as those relays go I know in the Rabbits they are all the same other than the one for the glow plugs and I doubt for a Golf that old they probably are too and you can just switch between them to test with.

so the P/O disconnected it, rather than diagnosing a simple problem? :roll: i thought you needed a working horn to certify a car, or did he not certify it?

We don't have a auto certification out in the sticks- but in the big city they have to be AirCared-

everything except the rear wiper works now- Toot Toot

it's not impossible that the PO either punched the horn pad once so hard he bent the plates, making them touch each other constantly. Or he had the same problem some foxes used to have. The mold for the visible rubber pad must have not been quite right and would deform when it would get very cold [or hot,i don't remember], making the horn come on sometimes just putting the ignition on or after honking. I used to have to take the pad off and carefully shave the outer circumference with a razor blade so that it would be square like the golf one.
