1.8t stock intercooler.
« on: January 24, 2009, 07:55:51 pm »
Hi just wondering if the 1.8t intercooler would be good on a 1.6td?  Or would it be better to just get something bigger?  I don't have the engine completely built yet, but it will be running more ponies then stock for sure!

No it would be pretty cheap.  We have a vw wreckers in the city and they have quite a few of them.   I just dont want to have something to big you know cluttering up my engine bay.

Just wondering if there would be a gain in a cooler that is this small?

Thanks,

theres gonna be a gain.Any cooler of temps is a plus. The smaller the cooler the less pressure drop.It just depends on how eficient they are at cooling the air.Bigger isnt always better in intercooling. You can get to big.

Thats what i thought.

I like the idea of running a smaller intercooler and also running a oil cooler.  I guess though its also i have to get the engine finished and installed and see how the intercooler is, if it doesn't do a good enough job ill find something else. Its just an easy part to get and small so an easier install and not as much clutter.

What size of intercoolers are you all running?

I have both a IC from a 1.9TDI and a IC from a 1.8T. They are about the same size. I plan to use the 1.8T IC in one of my 1.6TD caddies along with the 1.9TDI IC in another caddy.

the stock 1.8T intercoolers kinda suck.. they are really thick, and hard to mount in a mk1 or mk2/3 without moving stuff..

there are much better options out there..

myself personally, i dont even consider plastic intercoolers an option anymore.. the plastic tanks split too easy..

go with something all metal, like a supra intercooler, or starion, or eclipse, or ford probe, or anything like that..

all those that i listed, are 100x better than a 1.8T side mount cooler..
92 Jetta GLI - Black, 1.6D w/ GT2056V turbo..
86 GTI - 4 Door, Med Twilight Gray, Tow Machine..
86 Audi Coupe GT - Tornado Red, All Stock.. WRECKED.
89 Toyota 4Runner - Dark Grey Metallic, LIFTED!

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

you need something REALLY THIN to be able to retain your stock a/c

something like a supra intercooler.. they are very thin..

so are ford prob intercoolers.

Something like this?

I don't even see how that could be integrated properly.  It looks like one of the outlets is smaller then the other.  How bizzare!

And kaneb, as far as all these IC talks, what chassis application are you talking about?  MK1?  2?

Which do the Supra/Probe ICs fit best in?
