hi guys!  :wink:
if i keep speed under 100km/h i do tank after tank the same, 4,0l/100km! mk1 -83 na, 4 gears. i feel happy because all my other cars (except my tdi) takes at least the dubble. what is your fuel economy?  :roll:

Mine is pretty much always 4.8-5.0l/100kms. It could be better but I drive 100mks on the hwy everyday and always do above 100 so....

nice, think to find TDI and gearbox with good price, 300kg lighter car, 2000rpm in 100km/h, chipp,,,  i done 5,1l/100km with golf3 TDI automat, chipp+injektors, shoud be nice in golf1, under 4l/100km, and much more silent,,,   :roll:

Believe me, 44L/100km is good. Straight up 100% city driving usage. Eleven metric tons, 10.7m nose to tail, and just a smidge over 280 liters to the tank. Allison 5-speed automatic and a Cummins 5.9L ISB industrial engine.

Nope, they're heavy SOBs to be able to handle people smashing vehicles into them.

We had one that was hit in the nose, right there at the very front immediately in front of the driver, by a Grand Cherokee doing ~150km/h. The Jeep was totaled, but the driver of our bus was uninjured, and the bus was still "drivable." The collision blew out two windows, spiderwebbed the windshield and shoved the bumper sideways on its mounts an inch or two. Smashed up a lot of electronics housed up front there, but it was still running, no frame twist, alignment still solid.

$30k of body work and glass later, she's still on the road. :D Something the driver of the Jeep, unfortunately, cannot say.


Even at 44l/100km, their per-person fuel economy is phenomenal. I get that same mileage empty or full, and full load on those is ~60 passengers. So each of those passengers is consuming only, what, .73l/100km? Far better and with much better chances of survival than you'd get in one of those single-person commuter cars like the 1L concept.

Here the city company just bought some new MAN buses (12 m long 11 tons) with a 10.5L MAN engine. I wonder about their fuel economy.  :D

Probably rather the same, actually. With the 10.5 they won't need to rev so high to get rolling, but the bigger displacement is going to eat more fuel.

Probably 40-44L consumption, I imagine. What's passenger load on that 12m bus? :D

The fact is that this is a hilly city, so maybe they need the power to go uphill (they give about 270 hp).

The max. passenger load is 92 (27 sitting, 65 standing) or 8 tons.

They bought some articulated buses as well (300 hp, 139 passengers).

Btw, not to hijack the thread, I get between 5.3 - 6.0 L/100 with my mk2 gtd. But I drive "quite happily" and do some city and highway (above 120 kmh)

What's the usage? We have to range up to 100-110km/h with ours, so it's not all slow speed city driving, but it's still all stop-go-stop-go city driving.

I "test drove" an articulated demo bus NABI brought out to try selling us a couple. Big bus. Eighteen meters, 140 passenger official capacity, 8.x Detroit diesel engine and a six-speed hybrid transmission. Seimens electric motors, ~80hp per rear drive pair, so an extra 160hp or so for acceleration, regenerative braking... and rated for a whoppingly low 30L/100km for an approximately sixteen ton bus. :D :D

Yeah, it's not much power, but they rarely leave the city. Looking at the numbers is a bit deceiving, as they accelerate rather well (maybe because of the displacement). They behave a bit poorly IMHO when going uphill with a full load.

Previously there were a couple lines that went through the highway ring, and those were powerful as hell. They had the same 11L engine, only better. A mechanic of theirs showed me a HUGE repaired turbo that looked like a giant hairdryer.  :lol:

Mmmmm, torque and gearing. :D

Apparently we have the option of buying up to a 550hp ( :shock: ) engine in that exact same bus chassis... I heard that and it was an instant OMGWTF!? moment.
