Replacement for Throttle return gas strut

My throttle on my AAZ injection pump has not been returning like it should. It kind of hangs. I think the gas strut is not pushing it back to idle position. I think its the cold weather causing this. I tried oiling the linkage and it made no difference. Any Ideas on how to fix or where to get replacement?

Just take it off and dont run it. :D You wont have problems with throttle not returning. Im not running one.

Any of the gas struts I've seen on AAZ pumps appear to be simple dampers rather than return springs... and its my understanding that their sole purpose is to allow the throttle to hang open a bit during deceleration... perhaps for emissions or to save wear-and-tear on the throttle lever and stops.

In any event, I yank 'em off summarily to get 'em out of the way, with no issues.   I think you'll need to look elsewhere to find out why your throttle is not returning to idle.... if you disconnect the throttle cable does everything snap back ?

Haha, I notice the people replying to me are from Canada. This car is from Canada, still have Canadian change in the dash tray. OK, Ill check to see, but its slowly snaps back. When i push in the clutch the engine revs up a little because of no load. It looks like the cable has a little slack in it so I dont think thats the problem but ill disconnect to find out. I wish i could post pictures but dont think i can.

Here's an AAZ pump with the strut in question.... given the angle of the damper I really don't think it's configured to return the throttle lever (I'd expect it to pull on the throttle in a straight line?):



On the other hand, I've been mistaken before... several times in fact.:wink:

I've got a spare damper or two kicking around... perhaps some CSI analysis is in order... cue the CSI:Miami music.

Ok, thats a good picture. On that strut, when it is unloaded, if it remains pushed out, then i cant see any other reason for it. And just like the gas struts on a car hood or tailgate, the pressure drops with the drop in temperature.  And its 20deg here so I think thats whats wrong but im not sure, I cant think of anything else. BTW what kind of pump is this? Bosch VE? And whats the vacum looking valve for in the back?

hmm that looks like VW's way to smooth the pedal "feel"???....I would just take it off...
looks like a luxury item to me?

Yeah, it's a Bosch VE "eco" pump... small 8mm head, no LDA for boost enrichment.  Common on early Canadian AAZs, specifically the early diesel Passats (1993ish).

The black cylinder on the back is a vacuum actuator for fast-idle... the engine control manager turns on a solenoid valve which allows vacuum to the actuator and raises the idle slightly when the engine is cold, and also when the A/C is engaged.

I believe mines has boot enrichment, it has a dome on top with a hose hooked to the intake. Please let me know if you'd be interested in selling your extra strut, Ill have to take it off tonight to see if the pump itself springs back.

How much HP is this engine with boost enrichment?

Just take it off.

I'd call it engineering bloat. Remove it and you still have your diesel. Maybe you can stomp on the throttle a little quicker and let off the power a little quicker, but so what ;-)
