Are there any 6-speed tranny's out there that are a direct fit replacement for 1.9 IDI in a mk3?? Trying to get the rpm's down on the highway. I've considered a 5th swap but all's that's available is the 0.68 and it's a hard to find gear, as well what I've read going from 4th to 5th could be a concern.
Any thoughts on this appreciated. Thanks..

There is a tranny in europe...it is not a direct swap for a 020 but it is for a 02a.....its called the 02s and it came in 2 gear sets i believe one was long gears from a tdi and one was short for a gasser. it was a 6 speed. In order to install one into a mkIII you would either need to switch to a hydraulic clutch set-up or try and find the very rare 02a cable from a euro van. (I think) My buddy has it in his sirocco....hes running a 02a with the stock pedal cluster and master cylinder.

Either than that I dont think you will find anything.

What about shorter ring & pinion gears ? My last American diesel had a ration of 2.73 : 1 or there abouts. It gave me a highway RPM in the 1900 range. Would be nice to have this on a VW I'd think.

There WAS a company making a similar kit to add to an 020.
VL Enterprises was the name of the company, and it was the "Option-6" package.
The price looked crazy to me then (mid-late 90's) but looks good compared to the quaife option.
HOWEVER, the quaife is a full replacement gear stack for performance folks. I am pretty sure VL is no longer around.

You can also swap to a hydro trans assy, and then the world is your oyster! Just gotta mount the clutch hydraulics on the firewall, and install cable shift mech in the tunnel.

Also, do a little looking at your final drive:
My Tranny (Code: ACH, 85 TD) is a .75 5th gear with a 3.99 final drive.
If you can find a box with the 3.667 final (regular golf/jetta gl box)
you should see a noticeable drop in RPM's.
If you can combine that with a .71 or the mythical .688 5th,
(I saw a dealership selling them for like $350 for the set of 5th gears) you are really getting somewhere.

brokevw.com has the motherload of data on the 020 if you want to start seeking out your perfect box. There are a lot of unique boxes out there with favorable numbers.

I say find an 020 locally for $100 (regular GL box, 3.667 final and either a .75/.71 5th) and throw that in, and then tell me how much that helps, and then I will know if I need to do it too!

I am in the same boat... 70MPH = 3000-3100 RPM, and I am tached out by 85 MPH.

Yeah, maybe that was where I had read the bad stories.
I recall hearing some stuff over the years.
That was a hypothetical, I suppose, anyway.
(Yeah, there USED to be a guy making exactly what you want to buy now.... Well, no, he does not make it anymore... Well, no, when he made it it was not really that good.... No, I am pretty sure none of them even still exist....Glad I could help!!)
But I did see one for sale on the Vortex a year or 2 ago, but they were asking like 2X original retail...... I hate the Vortex. Dont even get me started on BBS wheels!

you can probably find a 6 speed box for about $1500 in decent shape... i wouldn't bother trying to convert a 5 speed into 6...

several people have been putting 6 speed boxes into mk3's and i've even heard of them in mk2's. all you need is a custom bracket.

thought about a mkv tdi 6 speed gearbox? fyi the bellhousing should bolt up to any 4 cyl, unsure about the rest tho.

Got this box to go in the wife's car. I think it's the tallest 020 box there is.

70mph = 2885 RPM's.

i have a gasser cluster with no tach so I haven't been able to know how much revs I've been turning since I swapped tranny's

I found these = maybe an alternative to a 6-swap. Pricey but cheaper than a swap. I think the .681 will be my choice.

those are very viable options for better mileage. its really hard to justify spending so much on a 6 speed box just for the increased mileage. one must also take into account the added performance benefit :twisted:
