with all due respect mate vr6's are slow to about 80, they are in no way quick. i had a mk3 VR6 and it was one of the most boring vw's i've ever driven and i've had quite a few small engined vw's, massively disappointed by it, the only thing it had going for it was the noise :-\

I drove a 2004 jetta vr6 6 speed manual 200hp, I thought it was crazy fast!!!!
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

that's about 15-20bhp more than the mk3 golf VR6, but there is no way you could describe them as crazy fast imo, nice sound and some mid range grunt but that's about it.

Uh, bone-dead-stock Corrado SLC's can run 14.9 in the 1/4, that beats like 75% of all of the cars on the road over here.  In the UK you guys got the 2.9 VR as well which has more than our 2.8's.  :P  My Corrado has a catless exhaust, intake, and chip and it has a hard time finding traction until 3rd gear.

its probably quicker than 75% of the cars over here too but most of that 75% are made up of non sporty cars ::)

it might feel quick, until you go in a quick car. when i had my VR6 i drove my mates impreza sti which was standard and that was on another planet compared to the vr. even my mk2 golf 16v felt quicker than my vr, and it's not just my vr that didn't feel quick, my mates just bought a mk2 golf with a VR6 in it and it goes well, but its in no way crazy fast as rabbitman was claiming.

Sorry if I affended you by calling it crazy fast, but IMHO it is just that. It beats everything I've driven hands down.

Back in the day people thought the rabbit gti was crazy fast, maybe that is because it was faster than what they were used to. ;)

you haven't offended me mate, i'm just pointing out that they ain't 'crazy' fast, besides my original point was that they are not quick off the mark and don't really get into there stride till around 80mph.

and comparing a mk3 golf VR6 to a mk1 golf GTI is crazy, the mk1 gti wasn't fast it was quick and nimble and they were its main selling points, it found a niche in the market and set the standard for others to follow. the mk3 VR was heavy, lazy revving with a terrible chassis even before it had the weight of the VR6 chucked in the front, the didn't have enough power for the weight of the car, and where the mk1 had nothing that could touch it when it was launched the VR6 had a lot of other cars in its class which were very good and unlike the mk3 golf they were fun to drive :D

with a terrible chassis even before it had the weight of the VR6 chucked in the front,

i dont htink the mk3 is a bad chassis - but the stock suspension is aweful i agree, along with the stock vr6 suspension.

i have my mk3 AAZ, and a mk1 with an 1800/cam/exhaust/dellorto carb. both cars have lower, stiffer suspension with uprated anti-roll bars, good tyres and wider rims.... and the mk3 will corner just as fast as the mk1 - although the mk1 ofcourse feels much nicer to drive :-)

I drove a friends mildly tuned MK3 VR6, and I must admit that it was an absolute hoot to drive. The power is there off the line, but just like the 16v, it really shines on top end. It would break the tires loose in 1st and 2nd, and squeal 3rd.

And next to an old big block v8, there's nothing out there that matches the sound of a VR with an intake and nice exhaust. Definitely the best sounding 6 banger out there.

Now if only there was a way to stop a MK3 from rusting. If anyone finds a way, let me know.  ::)

either you have to find one in GREAT shape(never happen) or order all the floor replacements, and once its all patched get the floor lined with bed liner
