I love it when the roads are snow covered and I launch my syncro hard on the green light leaving everyone else slack-jawed and tractionless far behind with only a hint of diesel soot in their nostrils because my AAZ rocks with a little insta-spool K03-003 I love my diesel syncro I love my diesel syncro I love my diesel syncro I love my diesel syncro the end.

well syncro is a bit different... quattro is all time 4 wheel drive. syncro works when the front wheels lose traction. some syncro's come with a diff lock too which is very nice :twisted: as does quattro

so with syncro you get the added benefit of 4 wheel drive, but without the extra losses of spinning extra shafts. (a few MPG's)

vw4motion is pretty much vw syncro, but has a bunch of electronic crap that goes with it. (AFAIK)

Vanagon and Golf Syncro utilized viscous couplings; when you lose traction, you gain traction, if that makes sense? There is no permanent mechanical connection between the front and rear differentials. When one spins much faster than the other, fluid in the coupling heats up, becoming almost solid and locking the drum and plates inside together into "one" unit. Essentially.

Quantum Syncros are practically identical to the early Quattro systems. Three differentials, 100% full time mechanical connection between the front and rear differentials, it's full time AWD. Quantum Syncros came with locking center and rear differentials, similar to the 4kQ and 5kQ of the time (pre-Torsen days).

It is my dream to eventually put a syncro/quattro on my ski hill shuttle.

Is it a straight forward swap or is there some lifting necessary? is lifting not necessary? (can i keep my tiny coilies?

:lol: Yeah the k03 can surely make a torque monster out of the AAZ.Definitely very good for daily driving and getting the big syncro off the line quickly.

Nah. I considered it, but decided to favour simplicity. It's a winter car, and spends quite a lot of time with every orifice in the front end jammed with snow!

with such a small turbo would an intercooler even be detrimental? would such a short distance between the pistons and turbo shaft (a normal turbo set up on our engines) be better than re-routing it to an intercooler then back to the intake. That quick boost may be slightly inhibited by the lag of an intercooler.

What minimal increase in lag a properly sized and plumbed intercooler might result in, I'd imagine it'd be beneficial overall. Mine pushes 14psi, which is fairly demanding, and probably produces somewhat elevated discharge temps.

Not caring.

It's completely stock except for the exhaust (2.5" mandrel, turbo-back) and a little tweak to the part-power timing solenoid. I just need the insta-torque, and it delivers!

This is why you go to an AWIC setup...
