Does anyone know an OEM application for a 300f/150c temp gauge (oil or water)?

I'm looking for a lower profile sender (M10 thread) for my VDO oil temp gauge.

I remember my Scirocco had an oil temp gauge but I can't verify that now...

Not entirely sure I know what you're after... but the standard coolant temp/oil temp sensor for the MK1 and earlier MK2 diesel and gasser chassis is low profile, M10x1, and the right resistance:

You'll find them in the junkyard... particularly on the oil filter flange of Jettas and Golfs with the MFA (multi-function display) but they are cheap at any Worldpac dealer too... 10 bucks or so (Canadian :roll: ).

From what I understand, VDO used the same 10-180 ohm range for everything but on different scales, so you gotta get a sender that matches the gauge scale. Maybe I'm misunderstanding it and that would make it very easy - I'd just get another sender like on my van or rabbit.

But yea, that one you posted would work physically - much better than the long sender that blocks half the oil passage...

Interesting... I understood that they used the same *sensor* for everything and just rescaled the gauges as needed. :lol:

Hmmmmm... wonder how to find out which is which...don't have anything more than a feeling on this at the moment... google to the rescue perhaps.

Hmmm.... found a couple different VDO catalogs... one of which shows the long VDO sensor with a temp range stamped on the housing... suggests the sensor has to be matched to the gauge as you suspected.

Can't find the range for the short sucker yet though... I've got a couple on my engine running against a 150C gauge... but will keep looking.

That 150c sender should work on a 300f gauge, just different printing on the gauge face. When I'm browsing for a sender to buy - what applications do you know for sure have that range?

What is normal running oil temp range?
Mine is running between (if my calculations are right) 90-110C 90 when moving 95-100 when idling and 110 on pulls longer than two gears...

110° is pretty good. the oil cooler does help equalize oil/coolant temperatures. so as long as the coolant is being cooled then you're fine. towing stuff you would be able to get 150°+ on a nice hill. always a good idea to keep an eye on temps while towing :wink:

are you running an 87° thermostat?

(me? I think so? my oem gauge in the dash is so friggen bizzare sometimes. It doesn't make any sense. I need to get the car running regularily before i can tell. I bought a new tstat but i forgot what temp i got its like 87-89 or something? i don't remember being surprised and i know my TDI runs at 90)

OK - I got it worked out...

#1H0 919 563 - oil temp sender, 0-150c range for a bunch of mid to late 90s VW stuff

This one can replace the M10 sender for the aftermarket VDO oil temp gauge with 150c/300f range. It does not protrude into the oil passage like the VDO unit either. I'll post a photo later - the girlfriend took the camera to go take pictures of a rainbow...

Then there's #049 919 563A - oil temp sender, 0-180c range for mid-70s to mid-90s VW stuff

This one is listed on some TDi site as working for the 150c gauge. If you do this, your gauge will give false readings.

On the left is the offensive VDO sender next to the OEM VW sender of the correct temp range. To the right is the more common and cheaper OEM VW sender of the wrong temp range:

Great detective work Chris.... many folks have been struggling with the one on the left and the oneT in the middle is perfect.. M10x1 threads, doesn't block the oil passage, and has a proper spade connection rather than the darn weird lug the other one uses.

I'm gonna check ETKA for applications of the 0-180C sender on the right.... I'm guessing oil temp on MFA vehicles among others.

What I wonder is what the range is of the one that is used on early TDs to monitor coolant temp.... that's where the one I've got came from. Perhaps since it's for coolant it's a smaller range... my OEM coolant gauge and my VDO aftermarket (connected to the same style of sensor) agree on coolant temp.

By people vince is including me. I had to move my temp sender from the filter location to the head location which was where i wanted to keep my stock OEM pressure idiot switch but now its at the filter. The far left sender DOES block flow and will trigger pressure sensors. Just ... you know ... double signing by experience sort of speak.

Edit: the best thing is the flange that i think Vince has... where it has extra slots for oil temp and pressure senders. I think he drilled and tapped the pre-existing flange? i may be wrong though im sure he will varify.

I just looked real quick at Partgeek.com - they list the water temp sensor and glow plug temp sensor as having a 125c range, for both NA and turbo engines.

That 180c sensor looked like it was for all water cooled VWs from the beginning to about the mid-90s. ETKA would probably know better though.

Eddy - your post, mentioning the high-speed oil pressure issues confirmed my concerns and is why I really got in to finding a different sensor.

The other thing I didn't like about the VDO sender is that it has tapered M10 threads - they look like 1/8 NPT. It might seal well but I'm scared to fully torque tapered male threads into straight female threads, especially in a reasonably thin aluminum casting. The sensor I posted above seals with a crush washer between flat sealing faces.

The generic coolant temp, glow plug, oil temp for MFAs found in earlier MK2s that looks like the one the right is 049 919 501 with a range of 0-125C... not the same range.

Just ordered me a couple of the guys in the middle... thanks again Chris.
