TD alternator brackets: Quantum vs. NA vs TD

The TD I'm swapping into the Caddy right now originally came from a Quantum.

 The PO put A1 manifolds on it and everything seems correct except for the alternator and its bracket.   My engine has A/C, so that's important to know throughout this whole thing...

When I got the engine, the PO had adapted the Quantum alternator to fit the engine to install it into an A1.  He did this by spacing out the alt adjustment arm (by 1/2 inch) and by drilling new adjustment holes in that arm.  It works, but it's not the most elegant solution, especially since it now interferes with the radiator I'm using...

To the point:  I'd like to use my known-good NA alt from the original motor that fits with the radiator and adjusts as it should.  

I went to put in the NA alt in place of the Quantum alt and found out that it can't possibly adjust belt tension due to the bracket that's on the engine.  

It appears that the top "ears" of the bracket (where the bottom of the alt mounts) are around 3/4 of an inch too low compared to an NA bracket.  Grrrr.

I've got the following questions:

1.  Does anyone know if the Quantum TD had the same style alt bracket as the A1's only a bit shorter?  The ET_KA doesn't seem to list a number that I can find.

2.  Is the TD alt bracket the same as a NA (from a 1.6 with A/C)?  I want to be able to use the NA alternator and adjustment arm on the TD.  I hope it doesn't interfere with the pump or something.  

Hope all that makes sense.   I have all the parts available, but pulling those brackets are is a pain and I only want to do it once.

yes - turbo and non-turbo motors use the same alternator mounts.

I am having a hard time following your current setup (pics would help.)  But if the crank pulley on a quantum has a compatible alternator belt position with a transverse diesel alt. belt, you might want to ask vwpieces about buying his cast-iron westmoreland A1 diesel alternator bracket, and just trying to convert your pulleys and alternator to the original non-A/C westmoreladn A1 diesel parts.  I've got a fresh, recently rebuilt westmoreland Rabbit diesel alternator (Bosch 65A) I could make you a deal on, let me know if you need it.

PS - didn't the quantum TD (or some of the longitudinal mount motors..) come with the alternator mounted on the back side of the block?  I've wondered if that might be a pretty slick setup on an A1 TD, as it would get the alternator out of the way and open up lots of room to boost tubes down in front of the injection pump, making it easier to install and plumb a front-mounted intercooler.

Ah... ok.  That helps.  I was thinking that the TD w/AC bracket was special to the TD because of the pump clearance or something.

Sorry about that... it was late last night and I was a bit worn out.  Couldn't get any pics.  Basically, what threw me off is that the bracket currently on the engine "looks" like the NA bracket but somehow has different dimensions.

I didn't like the kludge way of getting the Quantum alt to work on that bracket and when I put the NA alt on there, it sat too low and wouldn't tension the belt because of it.

My immediate thought was to pull the bracket and arm off of my working 1.5 and stick that on there.

I originally wanted to do that as well, but I discovered that the A/C system on the truck is in remarkably good condition and that the compressor is in good shape as well.  Since I'll be commuting with this one, I figured I give the A/C a whirl.  Might be a dumb idea.  If I get too fed up with these pulleys / alternator issues, I'll go the non-ac route.  Those parts seem to be relatively rare as well though...

That's a great question, Jake... I wondered the same thing.  I searched for a photo, but couldn't fine one.  Et_ka doesn't seem to help either... then I thought maybe the Quantum setup would be like the Audi 4000S (fwd) four cylinders anyways... Alternator on top like the A1's, but different brackets.

Any Quantum type guys/gals out there?

The alternator braket I saw on vwpieces photo album was one of the steel ones ... '80 and earlier non-AC ... 1.5D stuff.
 It won't match your injection pump mounting bracket but maybe another hole can be drilled in your bracket so it will bolt to it.
 ....so you're looking for an AC /alternator bracket for an A1?
 I pulled some parts off an '84 Audi 4000 diesel (hey it had a bad title) and it had the alternator bracket on the back side of the engine. I didn't get that part though.

Well, I emailed the PO of the engine and he confirmed that he bracket / alt were indeed from the Quantum.  

I pulled the bracket off the engine (Grrrrr...that's a bit rough) and compared it with the NA (w/ac) bracket I wanted to use... The Quantum bracket is on the left and the NA bracket is on the right.



It is indeed shorter than the NA bracket...and that explains why I was having belt tension and clearance issues.  

I'm wondering at this point  if the Quantums came with several different types of alt setups.  The one in Jake's pics appears to be one type (on the exhaust manifold side of the engine) and the one I pulled last night appears to be another type that would have been on the injection pump side of the motor...

All three of my TD quantums have the Alt under the engine. No a/c with any but one has powersteering. Justins looks like it has p/s and a/c. Only Quantums I've seen over here with the alt. on top were the gassers; 4 or 5 ganger....

That one bracket is longer because of the power steering mounting holes on the bottom.

The one on the right looks identical to the A2 setup on my motor. I am not positive on the upper alt mounting with the height difference & all. But the webbing & everything else looks the same. Maybe check out an A2 setup from a golf or Jetta. Here is a pic of my motor



& here is a pic of the radiator installed... I used the big diesel rad with AC.



But keep in mind the AC lines from an A1 may not work. However some A1's used the round compressor, SD507 I think, that will mount up in there. A2 used the SD508 & is longer so the lines may not work, well one may not. I need to have some lines made to complete mine. Anyone know where to have some made? I want to keep the longer SD508.

I have some parts for the A2 setup if you need.

Both of my quantums, with a/c and pwr steering, have their alternators located under the engine, passenger's side.  Not on the side of the injection pump, if this helps.

Ah Josh can you describe what the a/c feels like in a Quantum? I've only seen one 'Q' over here with a/c and that was a gasser  in a scrap yard. Wish I'd pulled it...ah well just have to dream on...
