Author Topic: AHU engine crankshaft in 1Z engine? (Read 11129 times)

So, the 1Z engine I´ve got broke the crankshaft... i´ve been told that its a common problem in 1Z engines...

is the AHU (tdi 90hp) crankshaft compatible with 1Z engine?

what can be done to make it possible ( if not)..

I'm not 100% sure but the AHU crank should go to thr 1Z block. But I'd ditch the weaker 1Z block and find AHU or AFN block and use that one.

Yeah, I think it is basically identical. Both don't have the chain-driven oil pump. You could even use an AAZ but it won't have the D-shaped crank gear mount.

why is the 1Z crankshaft 'weak'

isn't it the same as the 1.9 crankshaft? people get more than 150hp from that crankshaft without breaking it... how much power were you putting out???

I don't know how much weaker the 1Z crankshaft is compeared to AHU crank. But the 1Z cylinderblock is quite weak compeared to AHU or AFN block. If you are planning on pulling some serious power out of the 1Z I'd switch to AHU Cylinderblock.

but the AAZ/1Z should hold up to 180hp? the 1.6TD block was pushed to nearly 200hp by 935racer and held up. surely the 1.9 block could withstand that amount of power as well... now the rods are a different story... andy2 was able to slightly bend them with high boost.

AAZ and 1Z bottom ends will hold up just fine to approx. 170-200HP. The low end torque is what kills tose engines. Aki-76 had in his AAZ about 260hp/420Nm/2.6bar and the stock bottom en held up becouse the engine was giving the power in high revs. The redline was at ~6500.

When VW moved from 1Z to AHU bottom end they made some reinforcements to the engine block. AHU engine block is capable of handling power at least up to 300HP.

yea i suppose you're right... the low end torque is definitely a killer

what about a ahu crankshaft in a aaz engine?

I have a newly repaired, stock but the crankshatf is also busted...by the timming sprocket.

what do you think guys? should I go AHU crnkshatf on tthe AAZ?

I think the crankshaft is quite strong in all vw diesel engines. Conrods are weaker in AAZ. One thing that breaks those older engines is that under heavy load the engine block gives up and big end bearing move and that causes extra stress, unwanted vibration and disbalance to the bottom end. Then the weakest link cracks. Solution is to use a firm main gridle.

so... there should be no problem in going AHU crankshafting the AAZ...
getting the AHU timing kit to fit the AAZ ...

If the AHU crank fits the AAZ block correctly then there isn't a problem. Should be a bit stronger even. Remember to check clearencer with that plastic/wax measurement thing (don't know what it's called in english).

Could you tell us what's the difference? The pulley of course is different but what else?

Are you sure? I was pretty certain an AHU or 1Z crankshaft will fit an AAZ block. Just use the TDI crank pulley, which is much better than the AAZ one anyways.
