I noticed this weekend when I start my 1981 rabbit diesel pickup that a puff of smoke comes out upon starting her... It goes away immediately but I wonder what might be the cause.. Also should I be concerned?
Many thanks.
TT
If it's black then that is 100% normal
haha...at startup the pump is allowed max fuel momentarily before the flywheel starts to spin, which then acts on the idle spring.
You may have one glow plug burnt. how cold is it where you are?
Sorry for the novice question guys.. Its my fist Diesel and I'm learning..
Yes, black smoke... Like a magician making the rabbit disappear.. and its not cold at all where I live.. Maybe down to the 40's ?
Thanks again!

It sounds like you have a pretty good engine if that's all the smoke you get and then goes right away, that is what we all hope to achieve. Don't feel bad about asking though, we're all learning all the time. I've learned so much about these things since I've been here I'm soon gonna need a bigger brain to keep it all in

Unfortunately it doesn't work quite like that. Other stuff (usually important) gets pushed out instead.

It usually starts with significant other's birthday's and anniverseries... useless stuff like thatc

If your whole car is being covered in smoke then you have a problem. It should just be a small puff and instantly go away

Well that explains what has been going on, man it's just like DisneyLand in there now, hope it stays that way for a while
