I would rather do half a dozen mk2 heater cores then one mk3.
For me it was the originality factor, in high school everyone drove honda's and lifted trucks (I grew up in a very rural area)and a diesel vw was about as weird a vehicle that ever graced my school parking lot. After getting my first one it just kind of snowballed, especial when i started tuning them a bit.

After I dropped off my block and crank at the machine shop, (a shop that mostly works on farm/tractor diesel engines and medium-duty applications) the guy called me back after he checked things out and told me that in his opinion, VW makes the world's most perfect Diesel.  Felt pretty good hearing it from someone who's worked on a few in his life.  It also helped that he was a pretty big fan of older VW's in general.

I'm right in there with everyone else, for me the MKII diesel is the perfect car!.

Mostly it is everything that every other car out there isn't.

A fun nimble car with room for my largeness (6'4").
Simple and easy to work on.
Simple durable design.
Cheap parts and common interchangeability.
It's uniqueness.
The MPGs.
The sound.

I like VW diesels because once modded properly ( for cheap may I add )  I can go around telling full size pick-up owners that my little 4 cyl. car produces near if not more torque than their V8 and still gets 45 MPG

it's about the robust and reliable power of the VW Diesel & industrial engines
I have had these in Rabbits, dashers, Quantum, Vanagons, and even Mowers.. yes mowers see below.

and our Turbo Diesel camper on the watkins Glen Racetrack.. was the quickest camper on the track.  though some of the turn to speed recovery times were rough. the K14 helps over the oem K24 turbo.
