That make people love them so much?
I've always wondered that.. What makes them so great?
What is it that draws us to them?

I used to hate old Rabbit Diesels when I saw them smoking by on the highway, then I got interested in biodiesel and bought one to do experiments with. I ended up driving it to San Francisco, and I've been hooked ever since. It's probably the fuel mileage that I like the most about Vw diesels, and the fact that you can have a fairly modern car that's still really easy to work on.

How about it is the only practical diesel passenger car that we can work on easily here in America and can get to turn corners unlike big trucks. I love the look, function, and reliability of my vw. Nothing is that great.

For me, they are simple to work on, cheap, and when it comes to interchangeability, they are like playing with legos.
Oh, and the fact that I'm 6'5", it seems like I'm driving a full size go-kart, I can strectch my arms out side to side and my hands are out both front windows. I get out at the gas station and people look at me like I'm in a clown car.

Ease of maintenance on the early 1.6D & TD and non-TDI 1.9L, longevity of VW diesels in general, and the coolness of driving a vehicle that you can maintain/modify yourself with no computerized tuning required. Just to buy the QLoader and a single tune from KermaTDI is over $700 while the cost of turning up the max fuel screw on a 1.6L TD is $0, you just can't beat that.

After I dropped off my block and crank at the machine shop, (a shop that mostly works on farm/tractor diesel engines and medium-duty applications) the guy called me back after he checked things out and told me that in his opinion, VW makes the world's most perfect Diesel. Felt pretty good hearing it from someone who's worked on a few in his life. It also helped that he was a pretty big fan of older VW's in general.

I was convinced when i did an exchange for some work i had done for a friend. Took his 79 rabbit 1.6 na to NYC, with 3 others. With it loaded with us and luggage, cruising at 75 mph we got 45 mpg and with a motor that was down on 1 cylinder . I was sold then and there.

Plus now having been a mechanic for almost 29 years i don't feel like owning something i have to wrench on every few weeks. Reliable, economical, industrucable[?], and FUN!

I like the motorsport history of VW's. Early mk1 GTI's/Scirroco's ruled the autoX/circuit before the Honda fanboi's began their infestation.
BAck in the day I built vw road race cars, owned a MK2 GLI. Now I want that GLI back, but with good fuel economy.
It feels good to have something different. I like projects that my wife approves of
