AAZ engine runs on after ignition switch turned off
« on: January 08, 2009, 09:13:40 pm »
It would seem to be a choice of a sticking fuel cut off solenoid or faulty ignition switch, would that be a reasonable diagnosis?

The problem is, is that it's intermittent (has never happened for me, only for my wife).

How can I test for it?

I've already replaced the ignition switch about 4 or 5 years ago, and my pump is a Giles rebuild, less than a year old.

Any advice besides just sticking in new parts? (I could go to the dealer for that! )

Ignition switches are terrible things. 4-5 years is well within the range that it could fail. However, I suppose it would depend on how often it was used in that time period.

How did your wife get the car turned off when it happened? If she turned the key back to the on position then back to off then I would suspect the switch.

If it stopped on it's own after a while without touching the ignition switch at all (even tapping it with your finger) then I would bet on the pump solenoid.

On my car right now, my door chime will sound when my key is out once in a while. If I tap the ignition switch with my finger or wiggle it around a bit, the sound will stop. I guess that's what I get for replacing it with a used one from the junkyard! :P

My wife says the engine eventually stops on it's own, about 2 or 3 seconds after removing the key. She thinks, but can't be sure, that the electrical accessories also stay on for a couple of seconds, which would obviously point to the ignition switch being the culprit.

So I guess I'll give that a try first, will probably take a few days before I can get to it. Thanks for the replys, Neil
