mk1 clutch cable
« on: January 13, 2009, 04:35:53 pm »
Can someone give me some good pointers on changing a clutch cable? It just snapped on me on the way home from work :? The stop and go was fun... I think I'll need a starter as well.
I gotta do it @ home. I guess I don't have to jack it up right?
thanx

Couldn't think of anything better to do in the -20C

it's easy,
loosen the adjuster at trans, remove cable on arm,
stand on head under dash, remove cable from pedal.
instalation is reverse of removal.
adjust until you can pull up on the cable and lift it off the bracket about 1/8", check freeplay at the pedal is about 5/8"
Check the bentley manual for a few more words than this cliffs notes version

one thing not in the bentley.  Use small zip ties to secure the clutch cable end retainer to the arm on the transmision.  That way if and when your cable breaks you don't loose them on the road.
