Hi I've just got a 85 vw 1.6l n/a. And I don't know anything about it. :)I've got a 12 valve cummins that I truck pull with so I know how to do a little wrenching just not on the vw diesel. what should look for on the engine as far as maintence and What i can do to make a little more power for now. I plan on rebuilding it in the spring. But for now i'm just driving it.
Thanks
Joe
Welcome. What part of the world are you in ?
I have heard the pump is the same as the cummins 4B or really close. You can visit this in the FAQ, believe it or not this FAQ here isn't like most forums this one is useful.

There is more in the FAQ but this is enough reading to make your eyes water...The best thing I ever did for my NA was to make an intake out of 3" PVC pipe to let it breathe and turned up the fuel. During your rebuild you could also go turbo.
Definetely go turbo
dual downpipe manifold gasser intake(probably not nessary) and a giles super pump and you'll be happy
I'm from Ohio in the u.s. The pump looks similair ve pump minus the afc housing(no turbo) I'll probably go turbo. What needs to be done internally? Lower compression
Internally there is only one difference between the blocks - the oil squirter valves.
You can read about it here:
http://www.vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=8588The heads are the same as well. So basically, all you need is an inlet manifold, exhaust manifold, turbo, downpipe, boost pipes, turbo oil lines and call it a day. If you want some power, though, an LDA-equipped injection pump is a must. (The turbodiesel one.) An intercooler should also be on your list as it has no drawbacks, but improves power, fuel consumption and durability.
Another Ohio member! Cool!
I'm doing the same thing for my Wife's car, it's an '86 N/A that is getting a rebuild and going turbo. I'll update my build thread here in a day or two. Nothing major happening as my Corrado is taking up a lot of time and money at the moment.
Where abouts in Ohio are you?
Welcome to the forum.
Brendan
Thanks everyone for the replies.
I'm just a little south of columbus. I'm going to be tearing my dodge apart here pretty soon.(talk about time and money)

I just wanna drive this for the rest of the winter. Then in spring it going to be rebuilt.
