IP doesn't want to prime...
« on: January 03, 2009, 07:31:22 pm »
I have the feed line in a bottle filled with Cetane booster (i don't have any diesel on hand so i figured this stuff was the next best - man this stuff smells sweet?).

I have the timing belt on so i just put my biggest ratchet on the cam bolt and I've been turning it over for quite some time but i can see in my clear feed line that the fluid will only go so far down the line...

I have the return line going to the filter.

The hard lines are on upside down (i wanted to check the spray on my old nozzles)

The fuel return lines are connected up on only two of the injectors but the injectors aren't actually on the hard lines.

Do i just need to persevere and keep turning it? I've been spinning it for at least 5 minutes straight.

I'm pretty sure you won't be able to turn it fast enough to do it by hand like that.

Get some clear hose, put it in place of the return hose and suck the stuff through, if you have ATF laying around use that, or, just put the feed line on and prime the whole system in diesel.

You seem crafty, you could make your own pop tester?  Much safer, reliable, and easier to watch.

I don't really have the stuff or money to make one unfortunately. I had the injectors tested with my Mercedes nozzles and they were "within specifications"... but giles doesn't like the Mercedes nozzles so i may just go back to the ones that were in the injectors when i got the car.

It's getting ridiculous trying to get employed right now  I may end up working at an oil change shop  even that is iffy...

Places that i thought had high turn over said they weren't looking to hire in the last 6-8 weeks and aren't planning on it any time soon  :?

Make sure you don't turn it over by the cam bolt with the injectors in! It puts too much strain on the t-belt.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

I've had bad luck running additives at too high of concentrations. I'd use ATF if you can't get diesel.

I doubt you could turn the pump over fast enough, as mentioned

get one of those outboard motor priming squeeze bulbs and 'push' the fuel into the pump.

I've tried both the 'push' and 'pull' methods, and 'push' alsways works, while 'pull' sometimes works.

Ah, i'll have to make one then... or see if i know someone with one. I remember a fellow on here had one in his "in" line to the fuel filter. Genius. I put the injectors and glow plugs in with anti-sieze for a better seal :D haven't torked the injectors yet though. I broke the threaded part that the little nut goes onto the GP off somehow ... don't ask how because i dont know... it just fell off... so that's going to be on the far right and i'll run the bus bar to the other three then ahve two decent gauge wires join together, go to the fuse, then to my relay.

When you do your first start up, don't hold the throttle wide open right away and you'll be OK.  Just let it idle for a while and it will burn off/get returned to the tank.
