1994 Volvo 940 D24 TDIC M90

Hi guys,

I'm a Volvo enthusiast from the Netherlans=not a native speaker which means I'm sorry for any errors in my grammar/writing etc.

I currently drive a Volvo with D24 TD factory intercooled. 122 HP/240NM Within the Volvo RWD community these D24 VW engines aren't liked because compared to a redblock=Volvo cast iron engine which you can abuse all day long the D24 does seem to require you to be a less suicidal.

I've visited this board quite often in the past, just to read, not to post. I always have been impressed with the power you guys get from the 1.6 and 1.9 td engines. The D24 having 2 cillinders extra should have quite some potential.

Since I've got a '94 940 I've got an upgraded gearbox (stronger) and one of the latest and best D24's I'm interested in getting some more performance from the engine. I know some mods since Tom bryant (iirc) has visited a Volvo board where I often post.

I would like to know something about the fueling side of tuning:

iirc the stock pump/distributorhead is 10mm?

Where can I find a bigger distributorhead 11/12mm? I've seen some guys in Sweden who've bought them directly from Bosch. They say they have been fitted on some Penta engines (Volvo boat engines). I've googled and searched the web but haven't been able to find anything.


Any help would be nice.

I know you can use the same distributorhead as the bmw 525 TDS and the opel omega uses. They share the same 6 cyl bmw diesel engine.

I canīt remember which size the head is on a standard bmw IP is, but that engine puts out 143 hp stock. So itīs atleast 10 mm or maybe 11. But I guess the tuning market for the bmw diesels is bigger than for the 6 cyl VW workhorse?

I know a guy here in sweden that drifts with his 940 D24. He has plenty of power in his engine

The TD24 engine would be an especially good basis for a compound twin turbo setup... One small turbo to spool it up, and then another huge one to help you make 300 hp.
Would that be fun or what?  

About injection pumps - look through big commercial vehicles that have 6-cyl engines and Bosch VE pumps - with a heavy duty pump like that you will have significantly better performance while still giving less stress to the pump and also the rods, crank, tranny and clutch...

One local Toyota TD made 190 hp with 2.4 liter engine with such a pump - the pump had not been modified in any way at that point!
