ok i have an 85 jetta TD e few weeks ago i completely drained the seperator. Since then i havent been able to get the car started i think its because the cap wont go back on the seperator so i was told it can be removed. i wanted to know exactly how to remove it ive searched but cant find anything. also the tach hasent worked in the car since i bought it im ready to take it to the dealership but figured id ask here first

ya.. don't take it to the dealership!!!! :lol:

you can simply rip out the water separator and splice the fuel lines together. there should also be a check valve somewhere in there... that is usually a culprit for poor running engines as well (or even no-starts)

i think the water sep was good for some really terrible diesel, since any water in the injection system is very bad.... since it can erode the pump & injectors. 1.9 diesels do not have the water sep, but simply the fuel filter (which also acts as a water separator)

Ditto.
Just pull it out and connect the wires of the sensor (that goes to the glow plug light) together and that will kill the annoying flickering.

getting the fuel lines linked together can be tricky though. I think they are different sizes if i remember correctly. (going in and coming out of the seperator)

I'm pretty sure they are the same size. Also, I think you want to keep the wires apart from each other

SO i was TOTALLY wrong!
why did i think you had to connect them together?
and my lines are different sizes i know for a fact. Maybe my tank has been tampered with or something.

sorry for giving false info, i feel like a douche bag now.
I connected my wires together but i don't use my GP light for anything anymore so maybe that's why it worked for me.

So if I just disconnected the plug in the trunk, would you have to join the wires together or not?

I took mine off about 4 months ago as it was dripping. I zip tied the wires and sensor to a mounting clip, did not splice them together. But I never got any lights or anything out of it anyway. I took a 2 inch piece of steel line and hooked the hoses back together and clamped them tight and it has been working fine with no leaks.
