I have a 1981 Pick up that needed the engine gone through. This led to getting a ME code engine. I have gone through it rebuilding/reconditioning:
IP and injectors, Valve job (with a little porting work), .020 over pistons, rods & mains,equalized the weight of the pistons and rods, new oil pump and windage tray with a 5 Qt. sump, new 3 notch fiber head gasket and bolts, water pump and hoses.
The engine is still on the stand and now I want to turbocharge it. I found a KKK turbo off a Mk3 with an exhaust manifold and ALH intake. My concern is the oil return from the turbo. Can I route the line around from the turbo to the block off plate for the hole for the fuel pump? Will oil flow up hill? Should I drill a hole in the block below the turbo and use the line and banjo bolt that came with the turbo?
I am also concerned by the block not having any oil squirters for the underside of the pistons.
This modification is to improve and increase performance but not by much. I want reliability first.
Any comments or suggestion would be very helpful.

I, myself, would never turbo a NA block, though some have. Reliability would deffinitely be an issue without the squirters.
FWIW, the 1.6 turbo oil return has to be short and downhill. It goes back to the oil pan through a welded in fitting. The Mk 3 line (for an AAZ) is too short as the AAZ returns to the block.

IMHO, if you intercool it and are not looking for huge boost, the NA block will far well. But I live in the land of 10,000 lakes and snow, so it is not that hot here...

At least that is what I am banking on. That and my block is surposed to be a turbo block ;-) in an former NA install.

mine is aNA and has 70.000 on it with turbo conversion.
and that is with fuel and boost (139hp at flyweel)

it holds but you have to take care of it and do some good cooling mods

I was wondering does the turbo put  on a n/a block inprove the fuel mileage or just power out put, I am looking to increase mile per gallon and not so much power I am not in any hurry to go any where. comments /experences??

If you use it without turning up the fuel.It will be pretty much an eco pump.where the turbo serves more as a exhaust aid in cleaning emmisions.

28 mpg!!and i can pull down a house!
1.6td in toyota pickup
10mm head ,t3 intercooled.

Cleaning emissions by burning a little more fuel that would have been smoke = a little better efficiency / mpg.   So, yes. EcoDiesel

Better fuel mileage is what i am looking for with my winter beater. I picked up  a 91 jetta td w/ engine damage ( oil plug felll out ) and maybe the turbo will not be beyound repair. just something to pass the long winter season in the great white north .
