transmission code
« on: September 04, 2009, 04:36:09 pm »
I just picked up a early to mid 90's Passat diesel five speed with the code CEY. Can anyone tell me what the gear ratios and final drive are for this trans? I cannot find it on any of the lists I have access to. By the way, it is probably out of a Canadian car.  ???

I have just become interested in the transmission codes after my mechanic told me that my '92 Passat AAZ had the wrong transmission in it (!? - I'm the original owner and the transmission has not been replaced...) He believes it is geared much too low, possibly the factory used some gasser transmissions if they ran out of the proper transmission?

I just checked out the code on it and it says CEY, just like yours, but after hours spent searching the internet, I have come up empty handed. If you find any info, please let me know!

News - found some info, had a brain flash and started doing german language searches, it seems that CEY was in fact a correct transmission for the AAZ Passat in Europe, one website said 120 km/hr = 3,000 rpm, which agrees with what I see in my car. I still cannot find a gear ratio chart.

You probably have the CES transmission, it's an 02A box found in Passat Diesels from 1992-1994.  Ratios are as follows:

1st       2nd     3rd       4th       5th      Final
3.778   2.118   1.429   1.029   0.837   3.684

Hope that helps.

Success! After some super sleuthing on the internet, I found out that the CEY transmission is, in fact, correct for the early (1990 - 93) Canadian Passat TD AAZ. Since these cars were never imported into the States, there is a dearth of information (actually, no information at all - they do not seem to exist in any database!) about this transmission. However, these transmissions were used in Canada and Europe.

With the help of my parts guy (Kris at VM autohaus), we found the gear ratios in the European section of ETKA 7. So here they are, the transmission gear ratios for the 02A, CEY code gearbox:

1st     34/9    =  3.778
2nd    36/17   =  2.118
3rd     39/29  =  1.345
4th     33/36  =  0.917
5th     33/46  =  0.717
final drive   71/18 =  3.944

On my car I’m wishing for lower rpms on the highway, and would like at some point to swap in  a .681 or .658 gear. The .681 probably doesn’t make enough of a difference (5%) for it to be worthwhile, the .658 (9%) swap need a modified spring plate. More info here

Here’s an excellent thread with some good info (Mk IV TDI ALH)

I couldn’t find a kit on TDIparts.com. Impex has a kit, $335.25 US Ouch!

https://www.boraparts.com/index.php?manufacturers_id=11  has a kit for $279.20 US

Hope this helps you out. Neil
