Howdy Gang,
I searched but didn't have any luck
The back up lights on our '86 Golf diesel were always on so I disconnected the switch on the transaxle.
Is there a mechanical connection that could be stuck so the B U lights
are always on?
thanks

Does your car have an upshift light on the dash? Is the switch just a 2-prong switch, or does it have 3-5 wires and rectangular?
The Up-shift light style switches are prone to failure. New ones cost about $25-45 from most online suppliers.

Over time the prongs that stick out don't make contact with the parts inside the transmission. You can shave down the switch down so it sticks in a tad more and makes better contact like I did. But it was only a temporary fix that lasted about 6 months.

the plug has more than 2 wires( it isn't here to count them)
upshift light does not work- speedo panel has been modified due to the plastic "wiring" being messed up.
I replaced the high beam and turn signals and charge indicators with real wire and some Radio Shack LEDs plus added oil pressure and water temp and volt meters/gauges.
The back up lights are always on (when plugged in) so it has to be the mechanical connection
thanks for your help

I loosened the two bolts that hold the mount for the backup light plug and sprayed some Moov It( penetrating oil) in and what do you know the back up lights now work.
thanks
