Few choice ingredients....what engine/pump combo to build

Having got rid of my tuned GTD caddy some time ago, I've been aquiring bits and bobs for the next project.....
One mk1 Golf/rabbit 1.3 driver
One complete running AAZ, with 03 turbo and LDA pump
One 10mm TDI pump
Unknown 1Z tdi engine minus pump and turbo
A hankering for VNT
What would be the choice for engine build.....
Should I go mTDI, should I build the mTDI pump but keep it on the AAZ - i.e. have upgrade to 10mm head
Ideally I'd like 120brake+
What would you do?

What I would do ?
This is an highly biased answer (I will neither pay, nor do anything non virtual for this - most likely:)
Without much budget limits I would like to build an mTDI engine using the AAZ block (cause no crank position sensor is required) and the 1Z head but the AAZ block is more likely to require machining piston sleeves, plus (new) oversized pistons.
Anyway, it seems that you have anything needed to assemble a working TDI - but the wiring harness ?
Going mTDI might be more expensive than IDI - but reliability and performance are at that cost.
What I am certain : I choosed to go mTDI with the K14 from an AAZ and sold the K03 of the TDI ... VNT ? No, thanks !

I'd not want to go near hybrid engine builds, mainly due to financial constraints.
I'd also like 120+ horses, would I see that with the mTDI?
I could get the complete TDI kit easily - offered a donor last night for £100
Am quite tempted to do a complete TDI swap - electrics included......would I get the power I crave?

you can easily get the power you crave, and more... there was a guy on the forum who posted a dyno for about 180hp with all the electronics, but he used resistors in place of certain sensors (you still need the needle lift sensor on no.3 injector and crank sensor, and thats about it i think). now if only we knew the resistance numbers required for each sensor, we would be in business!!!
also look at getting the immobilizer deleted from the ECU. this will reduce any headaches with the install. otherwise you must get the cluster, ecu, and key from the car so they all talk to eachother.
i would say that the mTDI is probably going to be equally as difficult as getting the electronics to work if you're knowledgeable enough. the only benefit to the mTDI is the simplicity (and the non volatility during a nuclear attack  )
i went mTDI due to my mk2 not having the right hookups, and requiring quite a bit of work to get the electronics installed (why bother with such an old car, but still doable, and only worth it if you can get the wiring for cheap)
talk to Tintin and ask him how much horses he was running in his setup! he must have been pushing 150+

if you go TDI 2 things I could think about :
- the Mk1 has not the right pluggers (you'll need the Mk2 post 1989 or the Mk3 fuse box + ...)
- mTDIs often rely on bigger turbos, pump heads, injector nozzles, etc - so you can probably achieve comparable "e-TDI" performance using similar components.

Not a prob, I'm an electronics engineer with a background in vehicle loom design - the electronics come much easier than mechanical due to lack of experience with diesel pumps. However I'm a luddite an prefer the old skool mtdi method especially in a post appocalyptic wasteland

I know next to nothing of eTDI tuning - I'll have to have a read around.

Looks like we're on the same wavelength ...

About e-TDI tuning : I was rather meaning the mech. bits (pump head, injector nozzles, turbo, intercooler, piping ...) but - yes, someone - definitely not me - should care about the electronics after that.

sell the rest keep the 1Z, get a discovery 200 or 300 tdi pump and then uve got an MTDI that will run off the most simple loom ever and be very powerfull + you wont have to *** about with fly by wire, get a T3 if your on a budget or a gt28 if ur not. i would bother with VNT
everyone will probly slate this but there more trouble than there worth

sounds like you want the set up i have , M tdi nice pump, 1Z engine with standard turbo gt 15 , and standard injectors , nice big intercooler ,and 2 1/2 " from turbo to a 1 box exhaust systom
i would say its 130hp ish but got twice as much torque as a standard 90hp 1Z golf , this time of year with the damp roads i find it hard not to spin the wheels in 1,2,3,4
so a std golf 1z tdi with a nice M pump would work well for that sort of power

I'm liking the 1Z and disco pump option
My old caddy's 1.6 SB was near enough 130 brake - I'd want more from a 1.9.....what figures are we talking?
M tdi nice pump
Oh no! We are back in the clandestine world of Mtdi pumps! What is a 'nice' pump
Rich, why do you avoid VNT? I've already scored myself a nice linear actuator to work a VNT - I love the way the missus' toyota spools on it's vnt.
