people always talk about "tanks" as some unit of measure for fuel consumption. "oh it's really good on gas, only 30$ to fill the tank"

yeah well, replace your gas tank with a milk jug and it'll only be 5$ to fill the tank!!!    Genius idea i should market that.

That video pissed me off too much to watch the whole thing. Do they ever once mention the L/100km? or mileage? or how many litres a "tank" of diesel is?

I'm all for diesel's, obviously, but please for pity sake don't be a moron about it. No offence to the original poster! yeah they get sick economy but this forum is a very silly place to advertise it.

But after looking at that video, I highly doubt that was marketed toward someone with car knowledge. I think it is intended to be a "catch your eye" selling feature. The video really doesn't show anything at all...

I think the video is targeted to the average "non-automotive savvy" person.  I have lost track of the number of people who use that same criteria for vehicular fuel mileage.  "I get xx far on a tank."  So what?  Over and over again they can't even tell me the size of their tank, and they definitely can't tell me their fuel mileage.  They are not dumb people, but actual numbers relating to their cars don't mean anything to them or don't interest them.  For those people, the video works great as a marketing gimmick.  If I put a large enough tank in my Taurus, I can duplicate that feat but it doesn't prove anything other than I had a large enough tank to drive that distance with whatever fuel mileage I'm getting.  Also, the video doesn't tell you what speed they were driving, doesn't mention that it was presumably constant speed (no stop/go) or any of the other factors that virtually guarantees that not one person who buys one of these cars will ever get that same mileage.  It's just marketing.

The TDI's, stock vs stock, will always get better mileage than an indirect injection engine. The direct injection part makes them more efficient.

But you have to remember the TDI is a brand new car with a computer controlling everything perfectly. While the IDI's are completely mechanical with technology created 20 some years ago.

I just checked VW's web site and it's got a 55 litre fuel tank.  If they ran it mostly dry it would be 43 mpg U.S.

Don't want to deflate jj's baloon, but if I was only getting 40/45 US mpg from my TDI OR IDI, I would have to bring them into the shop to fix them.  However, when driven at legal speeds, we don't get much better than 50 US on the highway with the ALH car, whereas our best IDI (FIL's not mine) was able to crack off 60 (72 Imperial - no kidding) with consistancy (admitted different driver, probably not going today's full highway cruise speed).

Of course, what none of the older cars can do is get this mileage and meet current emission regulations.  That is a very impressive feat that only the CRDs can do.
