Is this a 1.9?
« on: December 07, 2008, 06:39:36 am »
I found an early 93 Diesel Golf at the junkyard yesterday and am wondering if it has a 1.6 or 1.9 TD. I figure if it's a 1.9 it might be worth pulling for my 85 Coupe. Here are a couple pics.

1999 Corolla

don't know if this helps but my ex-passat (1.9 AAZ eco) had the same looking injection pump (no LDA) with a shock absober on the throtle arm. The head cover has different attachments than the 1.6 TD and N/A I've seen.

1.6 or 1.9 should be marked on the bloc ...

the valve cover is an easy give away.  1.9's have the three bolts on top, and the 1.6 has 4 on the front & 4 on the back.

other give aways = the altnernator has the serp pulley & the dipstick is definitely AAZ... the pump is also AAZ (if you know what to look for on it - the solenoid in front & the gas shock type looking thing in front)

Thanks. Until now I had never seen a 1.9 so I had absolutely no idea. The good part is I can probably get it for scrap price or less because the car is there to be crushed. The guy doesn't really sell parts, just crushes. Luckily if he's in a good mood he'll let a person go in and take what they want off them for free (hence why I was there yesterday). The down side is that it's VERY unaccessible until he's ready to crush (likely in the spring) because it's right in the middle of at least 200 cars packed like sardines. It was enough of a battle to get back in there walking over frosty slippery cars yesterday to get what we needed. I'll have to ask him what he knows about the history of it when I seem again.

Definitely an AAZ and before wasting any time, check the crank pulley. It's the #1 reason why those cars are in the yards
