Waste gate, are you ok back there?
« on: December 03, 2008, 02:31:25 am »
Garett t3.
How do you get at, or modify, the waste gate?

It's behind that plate at the back there, i know that. But the studs/nuts holding it on are so heat warped they are one piece of metal now. Has anyone managed to take off the waste gate plate to modify their waste gate?

I'm not even sure what i'm trying to do. How do you change the waste gate? I want it to release at 20 or 25psi instead of 10.
I have no BOV (ALH intake)

If it's seating properly you just need to interrupt the boost pressure going to the diaphragm. The line going from the outlet of the turbo back to the diaphragm. Know which one I'm referring to?

As long as you have a bit of discipline with the loud pedal.

Yeah.

I'm just thinking. Since there is no throttle body we don't technically need BOV and we never make vacuum pressure. Couldn't you have the turbo with no way of bleeding the boost and just have as much boost as your exhaust makes? regardless?
OR will this run extremely lean, like a gasser would, and create hot spots and terrible wear (the list goes on)?

and also i like my turbo and i don't want to wear it out. I'm not talking about extremely high boost pressures here.

Yup, you don't really need the BOV and you will need to remove/modify it if you want to run more than about 12psi.  I know guys do it but I personally wouldn't just block my wastegate and run with it.  It's pretty simple and low cost to make yourself a manual boost controller.  That way you have a bit of a safety barrier.

You don't really have to worry about the engine running lean.  The heat in a diesel is directly proportional to the amount of fuel you put in.

Oh ok.
Thanks fellas. I kinda like the idea of no waste gate. Set the boost pin to where you want it and your boost is proportional to how much you lean into the pedal right? want to be conservative? never floor the pedal - keep your turbo healthy. need to show that ricer what's up? floor the pedal, watch the boost climb and don't push it over what you set as a safety net
my inter cooler wont take more than 20 i don't think. (it has fiber glass sides)
I probably don't know what im talking about so please correct me.

I modified an ALH intake to fit with my 1.6td exhaust manifold, t3 turbo and aaz head.  8)
I have a silicone elbow on the intake that can swivle, ideal for inter cooler piping! I should really take some rockin awesome pics.
