Anyone have experience with Water/Meth injection?
« on: December 01, 2008, 08:38:36 pm »
I know on gas motors a cheap ($300) Water/Methanol (50/50 mix) will give you an intake air temp in the 30-40 F  range.
I also know that water meth kits for big diesel trucks are one of the hot newer things to add to the mix.

Anyone personally run one of these?
Curious to know the results on an ol' IDI.

My plan is to install this instead of an intercooler.
Maintain the short length of intake air travel,
keep temps WAY lower than even the biggest FMIC, when the boost is on.

The only negative is that you have one more tank of fuel to maintain.
(but you only need that for high boost runs... if you set it to turn on at 11 PSI, you can do everything the same except for the fun stuff)

Thanks in advance,
BRAD

I injest a lot of water everyday, but try to stay away from meth anymore
Seriously though, I haven't ran any in my IDI. I have a friend that did something like this to his cummins and really liked the results. To each his own, I would like to know if you try and your results.

I am doing this with a kit I got on ebay for $200, like you said it should tame intake temps and allow for really short intake lengths, supposedly it also adds power as the water droplets turning into steam on the power stroke generates additional cylinder pressure, it also effectively lowers EGT's

should be fun

Im running water meth. My nozzle is a bit small at the moment but it does help the egts a bit. Pulling water meth out of the washer reserve tank. using a 3gph nozzle with a 150psi pump injecting the water pre turbo.

Built the system for around $100

In a diesel that water is going to have reached boil-off temperature before the power stroke. Hot chamber, high compression temps, low boiling point for the water. You're seeing steam on the compression stroke.

i've tried it on my car... it does seem to reduce the smoke, but makes a pinging sound in the engine.. needless to say i don't run it anymore!  but maybe my spray nozzle is too close to the intake ports??? not enough time to atomize properly?

Perhaps more water, less methanol? If you're "pinging" you're probably pre-igniting the methanol in the mix, adding a little more water might help control that?
