Which manual transmission was behind the vw diesels in the volvo's?? I'm pretty sure it was a volvo i'm just not sure if there was a adaptor or a custom bellhousing or what.

The volvo diesels were 6-cylinder engines.  They share the bolt pattern of the 5-cylinder engines, but not the 4's.

I have to agree with Andrew. Easy and cheap were the opposite of my diesel conversion. I wanted uniqueness and I am paying for it with MUCH more time invested than if I had gone with the many. The parts for these transmissions on the 4's are likely rather hard & $$$ to get if / when you need them. I'm sure some of them are in common with other Audi / VW trans sold here.

the 1988-1992 audi 80 and 90, B3 platform with a O1a quattro driveline has a dual bolt pattern that has both 5 and 4 cyl pattern, also, a 1.8t shares this pattern.

Depends whether you're shooting for more power at higher speeds or better economy. The current gearing will run outa steam right around 90+mph but it would be fairly driveable compared to current vehicles. Otoh, you would get significantly better mileage if you dropped engine speed down to the ~2000-2500rpm range and cruised at ~55-65mph. It really depends on what you wanna do...
