2.4 five cylinder or the 2.4 "Volvo" six cylinder engine?

The Volvo engine was available in the US, in 240s in a naturally aspirated incarnation, also available in the 700 series cars either NA or turbocharged.

The five cylinder engine was not available in the US.

You're probably talking about VW's AAA engine... five cylinder normally aspirated.  Shipped on Transporters and Eurovans in Canada... probably Europe... dunno about the US.

Wouldn't be my first choice for an engine actually... it's around 70hp so about the same power as the much more common 4-cylinder AAZ engine, and parts are getting hard to find... 5-cylinder injection pumps and lines, etc.  It's also a completely different engine mount config than the standard MK1/2/3 which may or may not be a factor, depending on your target platform.

I think is a great motor & think about the 5cyl tdi possibilities....

Lots in Canada, maybe not so much in the excited states.
