86 Jetta 1.6TD, electrical problems>???
« on: November 24, 2008, 03:33:37 pm »
Okay so here is my problem:

Was at school, car worked fine on the drive there. Got in after class, turned the key and nothing. The glow plug indicator wouldn't come on, the battery charge indicator wouldn't come on and neither would the oil pressure light. The headlights works, the radio works, the signal lights and dash indicators work.  but it won't even crank. I checked the starter, the battery, and replaced the ignition switch, which was a royal german pain, and still no end to my problem. The only other thing I can think of is the windshield leaked a little and maybe the fuse panel got wet??? Could this be the answer?? Would a faulty fuse panel cause these symptoms?

Anyone who could help me with this would be much appreciated. I really don't know where else to turn and i love this car.
Thanks

very possible . If there is any rot at the base of the windshield, then water can pour straight down onto it. look for traces of water stains at the fuses, pull some relays to see.

I'll bet that's your problem. If not it could just be a bad relay or 2 but it sounds like your heading the right direction.

Alright well this might sound silly but i fixed the problem and it was soo simple I am embarassed. The ground wires coming from the battery to the frame were a dirty on the ends. I took them off, cleaned em up shiny and voila, fired right up. I can't believe it. I'm happy it works now but I mean come on, bad ground??  Just goes to show how something very simple can cause some serious problems. Thanks very much for your posts guys. I'm gonna stick around and see what other valuable vw knowledge i can gain from you pros

Well that's one thing we all consider to be a "Upgrade" is new and extra ground wires.

It's not such a big deal on our older diesels but on the 16v cars and newer ones its a VERY good thing to do. Sure doesn't hurt on our cars either.
