i'm guessing this is going to be terminal?
« on: November 19, 2008, 04:19:55 pm »
the story starts a week ago we i was pulling in to my mates street in my 1.6td and it just looses all power, even at full throttle it was like it was ticking over then when i let off it died. i checked under the hood and could see nothing amiss, tried restarting it and with quick a bit of cranking and keeping my foot to the floor it started to fire then chugged into life, kept foot to floor and it cleared and ran fine again with no problems.

then last night it did it once again but drove home fine, drove to and from work today fine, then i set off to the shop, it did it twice on the way there then on the way back did it every time i slowed or came to a stop. as i could find nothing wrong with it before i didn't bother checking it, just tried to get the short distance home. when i got home i looked under it to find a massive puddle of oil, jacked it up for a better look to find oil covering every thing from the back of the engine to the rear of the car, this was the course of it...

the pipe that goes to the turbo had come off firing all the oil every where, now i know i'm gonna of probably damaged it trying to drive it with no oil but is there any chance that its not totally fubar? once i'd put the pipe back on i left it a little while and tried to start it and it fired up and revved fine, but i had to turn it straight off due to having no oil in it.

That's what I would do. I'll bet the cam towers are damaged as well as the bearings but like Duane said what do ya have to loose?

It you had check the oil the first time it died, I'll bet you could have been fine. I something similar happen to one of my 1.6L NA when a cheap filter burst. Didn't try to start w/o oil. Replaced the filter with a quality one and filled the pan = Ran another 100 k Miles w/o issue.

But, yours has been started and ran repeatedly w/o oil. Pull the valve cover and look at your cam lobes and followers. These will die before the engine bearings when staved of oil (usually) - I bet they are gulled.

Its only 8 nuts - 10mm socket - to pull it.

next time my car 'breaks down' i guess i should check how much fuels in it

it was loosing power cutting out and taking ages to start again due to the tank being empty, and from the trail of oil i followed earlier the oil pipe must of only came off up the road from my house and judging by the amount of oil it took to get it to register on the dip stick there must of still been a fair amount in the engine, obviusly not enough to show on the dip stick but still enough to stop it causing massive damage when i started it. i guess my fuel gauge works better than i thought it did.

Pull the valve cover and have a look at the cam towers and tops of the lifter buckets. looks for signs of heat or wear. If those are good, maybe you got lucky and didnt drive it completly out of oil, just mostly....
