MKII wiper delay mod

I've read a bunch about this on the vortex site but couldn't seem to post there, and searched here with no results, so I'll ask...

It seems confirmed that a MKIII programmable "99" wiper relay is plug-and-play replacement to the MKII "19" wiper relay. I did this, but for the life of me I can not change the duration of the delay. I have a CDN '91 Jetta TD Wolfsburg.

First I bought a new 3B0-955-531 and installed it. It wipes every 4 sec on delay but I can't 'program' it to a different duration. Everything else works fine, i.e. low/hi speed and wipe/wash etc. I used to have an E34 BMW with this type of intermittent wiper, so I am familiar with the operation. Well, maybe this one was defective...

So I went to the wrecker and picked up a nice shiny "99" (p/n 357-955-351) and installed it with the same results, except this one is on about a 6 second delay. efffffff.... anyone helpful suggestions out there as to what my problem could be?

What are you steps for "programming" the relay?

I put one in my 1982 Rabbit pickup. When I turn on the intermittent, the wipers will not come on immediately. I simply wait however long I want (up to about 6-7 sec), then turn the wipers off. Then, when I turn the int. wipe back on, it wipes the time I waited to turn them off.

I'm pretty sure that's how they work. I don't think you can get a 10 sec delay or longer. 6 sec seems about the max, and you can get it down to about 1/2 sec.

Relay 99 will give you up to 30 seconds actually (if it's working properly !).

To program, turn to intermittent for one wipe, and then turn to off.  When you want them to wipe again push the stalk back to intermittent. and leave it there.. the relay will have memorized the delay while it was off and repeat.

To reset, just reprogram by starting over with a single wipe as above.

thanks for the suggestions - they're working now. I know I was doing the programming procedure correctly (per Vince instructions) before, but maybe inserting and removing the relays enough times cleared off some debris from the relay base contacts - but even that doesn't really make sense when I think about it. If there were dirty contacts, you would think that the delay function wouldn't work at all.

Worked like a charm. Also got rid of the annoying couple of wipes after washing the screen, or extra smearing of roadsalt if the wash bottle has run dry. :twisted:

Now how would one alter the rear wipe timings? say twenty seconds instead of the usual seven? Solder iron & surgery? :wink:

I've Always owned MK3s and didn;t know that...I still have yet to try it lol

my audi has the same setup for wipers, i just never knew thats how they worked. i always wondered why they came on for different lengths of time every time i used them. haha. 83 had to be one of the first uses of the programmable relay tho, cause that car is ancient.
