Converting to Serp. belt?

Hi there, I am new here (and to VW diesels) I have a 1991 suzuki sidekick that I am going to put a 1.6TD in. I just bought an '88 parts jetta for the motor!  :twisted:

My problem is my sidekick has PS and AC and the motor I bought does not have AC (I haven't even looked to see if it has PS?)

I read on here that the V-belt PS and AC system sucks I was wondering what is involved in switching to a serp. belt system if even possible?

I'm sure I will have many questions over the next months and I find this forum more than helpful so far!

I'm not sure why they say the A/C and P/S v-belt setup sucks....but converting to serpentine probably wouldn't be easy. They probably had serpentine belts on the MK3 1.9 TD's, but the alternator and A/C compressor would be the MK3 style which would mean much more expense to get them. I take it you want to keep your air conditioning? I think most people that do this swap dump it. I'm not even sure how well the VW compressor would work with the suzuki A/C system.

thanks. Well I was just doing some reading and noticed quite a few people complaining about short belt life and such with AC.

I drive this vehicle 120 kms per day and want AC! I am looking to increase my mileage while gaining a little more power than the stock 4 banger has now (80 HP, 98 ft. lbs, at a high RPM) I want to keep all the creature comforts and have a capable 4x4. I can adapt my current pump but it has a serp. pulley on it and I would need to change it out and make a bracket. I don't see why a VW AC compressor would not work with the Zuk system?

It seems likely it would work, but as it has been explained to me the parts in an A/C system are somewhat matched. Are there the same number of grooves in the suzuki serpentine as there are in the VW?
