Re-torquing a 98 AHU head???
« on: November 09, 2008, 06:26:58 pm »
I recently replaced a dinged up head on an 98 Jetta AHU -
I am pretty sure that I oiled the threads but did not notice that I needed to oil the bolts' heads' and washers'!

When torquing head I noticed some of the bolts kind of clacked/creaked making a sound like they may have snapped or something - is this normal? If not was noise possibly due to resistance of head against washer? If so now what should I do? This engine has not been started!

Can I take one bolt out at a time - re-oil both threads and head/washer and reuse? And or are these stretch bolts now No Good? If I have to replace the head bolts can I save the head gasket by taking one bolt out and replacing them one at a time? - And if so in what order should I do so - as if I am taking the head off or torquing head down to begin with? Has any one ever have this kind of experience and how can it best be fixed and how?

Thanks
Stephen

the bolts are now no good (if you remove them for whatever reason, except they bolt right into the block to hold it in an engine stand - and are long enough!  8)).  for peace of mind you might want to consider taking them out and replacing, then oiling everything that the bentley says to oil (threads, head/washer) - the friction from the washer might change the actual torque, and you won't have as good of 'bite'.

you might get away with just running it as is though.  i wouldn't think that the washers would change the torque setting that much, but it might.

Is this after the initial torque?because the two 1/4" turns that "stretch"the bolt will make this horrible noise.

Yes this is after the initial torquing - OK so this noise is not uncommon during the 1/4 turns - thanks for the info!
