Golf MK3 Speedo query/help

My speedo works fine until i hit a certain speed and then it will be random - it will flick from zero to 70 at any given time and i sometimes just done know what speed i am doing. Could this be the speedo sensor playing up? Any ideas if it could be something else?

Does anyone know where the sensor is located and what is the right part number for this for an AAZ engine. I went the VW yesterday and the guy was a right pain in the rectum and said that I had to find out the part number myself as he would not be able to find out what it is even though he had my registration and chasis number.

vw want £41 + vat for the sensor !

i already have a spare speedo i won on ebay for 99p  

will try that to see if that makes any difference to my jumping speedo and if not then i will get one from my local breakers anf give that a try before i spend silly money on a switch.
