1966 Volvo Wagon with a VW 1.6 diesel & Toyota 5-speed
« on: November 05, 2008, 09:14:26 pm »
I now have all the parts that I need to start putting the diesel in my Volvo.  I purchased a 1990 Jetta with a 1.6 diesel for the donor car.  The person that I bought the car from had a turbo and exhaust manifold in the trunk.  He said that it was possible to upgrade the NA engine to a turbo.  Is this true?  If so, are there some websites that address how to do the job?  I could use any input that you might offer.

I'm also curious about what rpm would be best for crusing at 60 mph.  I currently have 26.0" tall tires, 4.56:1 rearend and the fifth gear in the W59 is a .85 ratio.  right now it looks like I will be turning 3185 rpm at 60 mph.  Are there any recommendations?

those rpm's are a bit high if you want to get the good mileage (in a turbo app.)

yes you can put a turbo on an N/A motor just the way it is, but you need to put the turbo intake on as well.  the only problem is exhaust gases.

http://www.dieselvw.com/EGTGauge.htm thats a cheaper gauge, but nobody has commented on the responsiveness of this gauge... has anyone bought one???

http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/inpages/westfaa_egtcht.php

i forget which one was recommended, but these are quick reacting, and very good quality!  jake on this site gave it a very good review!  it was about $80 for both the probe & gauge.  their gauges aren't pretty, but they do the job!

now the N/A pump will need to be turned up most likely to provide boost, and you won't have any boost enrichment.  for this you need to either buy a turbo pump, or the turbo pump head.  spearco made a turbo kit though, and it had a boost enrichment device that screwed into the max fuel screw.  quite ingenious, and could easily be re-constructed by someone with the right skill

now if you installed a small K03 or VNT turbo, you wouldn't need the boost enrichment device, as the turbo would spool very quickly and give you the boost to burn the extra fuel.  OR you could simply increase the fuel, but wait till the turbo gets going before you mash the pedal   (keeping your EGT's below 1300-1400F)

Got some photos of your project ? Photobucket.com is an easy way to post them into your vwdiesel blog :-)

I'm always eager to see how people are using one of the best diesel engines I've laid hands on.

How are you adapting the engine to the toyota trans ? Why toyota and not the VW Fox trans ? Because you have the toyota ?

What Audi trans is rear wheel drive?

Andrew

There are guys who used the Audi Quato trans for a rear wheel drive. They use it in 2wd mode and don't connect the front drive shaft.

Any progress with your motor transplant?
Is the transplant recipient a 122?
Why not use the Volvo M41 transmission?

Which older models in the U.S. came with a 4-cyl.?

Andrew

The Audi 80 (type 81 body) had the 1.6L TD - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audi_80#B2_.281978.E2.80.9386.29
some guys brought them back from their military tour in Europe.

You're saying that the Audi 80 was offered in the U.S. with a syncro tranny and a 1.6TD?

Andrew

No, here they called it a 4000 with the 5 banger... the 80's here with a 1.6L was imported by the G.I.'s ( others ?)

Right, that was my impression.  No RWD transmissions in the U.S. that will bolt up to the 4 cyl engines prior to the Quattro with the 1.8T.

Andrew

Not at all what I am saying. :-D They are here, although not in great numbers. To say they are not is like saying there are no Citroen diesel cars here from France. They are by the same path. I have laid my hands on them too here in Detroit. http://www.citroen-ca.com/members.html

Another eclectic diesel I have seen here that was not imported by the manufacturer is the diesel 2 door Mercedes-Benz Geländewagen convertible with a manual trans. http://www.gwagen.com/search.php#
