Just wondering if anyone has experienced this. My car makes a moaning noise when I hit about 80 km/hr. It makes the sound no matter if the car is in gear or in neutral while I am on the highway. I have a 5 speed 1990 jetta diesel. It sounds like it is coming from the front but there is no clear indication as to what side it is coming from. I replaced the passenger side bearing and balljoint since the balljoint was bad and I figured that the ball joint may have caused the bearing to go bad. After replacing those parts I took it for a drive and still got the same thing. Could it possibly be the inner cv joint? What are some symptoms of an inner cv joint going? I know the outters start clunking when you turn but what about inners?
CV joints make a clunking/knocky noise and will clunk at any speed not just 80+
ive come accross this problem before, in my golf td it turned out to be the diff in the gear box, was like it for 3 years, as soon as you hit 60mph it will moan but go over 100mph and it goes away, wen i sold the car the next person changed the box and the noise went.
it never caused any problems apart from the sound
if its not ur bearings id say this is your problem, im pretty sure its not ur CV
yea i wouldnt think it was the cv joint... on my jetta the drivers side outer boot was torn and ran dry. all it did was make this pronounced clicking noise at low speeds...
For right now, I would elect to make sure that transmission is full of oil.
So even though it makes that noise when I put the tranny into neutral so it is not engauged and it still makes the noise it could be the tranny? I thought it might be the tranny but then started looking elsewhere after the noise still happened when it was in neutral while coasting at 80 KM/hr. I ruled out tires (checked for tread seperation) and the wheel bearing. I will try adding some lucas additive to see if it helps with the noise and see what happens. Thanks for the help so far. differential is still spinning in neutral
I would lean towards the other wheel bearing.
