One last question on timing belt tension..
« on: November 02, 2008, 05:39:26 pm »
I understand that VW reccomends being able to twist the belt almost 90 degrees between the IP and the cam sprocket which my belt is able to do, I also understand where the timing marks are and mine line up, what I am confused about is there still seems to be a "looser" spot on the belt.  With the car idling the belt has some up and down movement between the two sprockets, under load the belt has less movement, is it possible that the belt is one tooth off somewhere providing the extra slack or do they just have a little play in general.  I have done timing belts on other cars and never seen this much play but the VWs seem to allow alot more than some other cars I have delt with.  I will try and post a video to see what you guys think too.  I would say up to a 1/2 or maybe 3/4 quarters inch deflection total...Just not real consistant.
