I am driving along 309 heading to allentown. Im doing about 55-60 mph. All the sudden I see a massive brown blob with antlers come charging from the right lane as I come out from an over pass. I stomp the brake, clutch, and yank the e brake. I get about four feet of skid and bwam! I see a shower of glass, antlers, then feet, then tail. engine is still running. I jump over to the side. Front bumper is fine. Hood is crumpled. Right fender is bent in. Antenna is mangled. Frontleft light and fog light is shattered. Euro plate gone, grill disentergrated. Its steaming and hissing. Rad/hood support bent in about 6 inches. I forced the hood open. Looks like the worse of the dammage is the rad/ac condenser, hood and fender.
I limped a few miles to a lot. Thank god I have a parts jetta.
So if your going to hit a buck at least do it in a td jetta with a metal bumper.

a deer always takes out the hood and radiator! don't matter what bumper!
i hit one with my 82 coupe and the bumper just takes out thier legs and sends thier mass into the hood and then up and over the car! since i been in a deer accident i can always spot a car that been in a deer accident!
but it does suck!

I had an 83 Caprice cop car years ago.. The former owner warned me that deer seem to like it (he wasn't kidding I hit six in the first 3 months I had it).. Every time I at least needed a hood and header panel.. At last half the time it would nail the radiator too..
Pegged a nice sized on at well over 100mph and the hood actually broke loose and flew over the car.. Not to mention I wiped out the whole front clip..
I dread the day I hit one with the Rabbit..
DEER SUCK!!!

I've hit 5 with my 85 Coupe so far. I swear that there's a piece of metal on it somewhere that's bent in just the right way that makes a sound like a deer call when the wind blows through it. It's always handled the deer hits pretty well. Dad's 81 Rabbit on the other hand didn't handle it's deer hit so well. I hit a 12 point buck with it and it took out everything clear to the strut towers.

It even took out the battery, radiator, distributor cap and oil filter. It broke one horn off the deer but it was still able to get up and run a hundred feet or so off the side of the road before it dropped. There are one tough animal. Around here hardly a day goes by that a deer doesn't run across the road in front of you.
This is about the most damage I ever did hitting a deer. Had to replace a headlight and the rad support and move the hood latch forward 1/4" or so. Luckily the hood bra hid the hood damage.

I swore that was the issue with my old Caprice... Put louder exhaust on it in hopes that might help....... The kid I sold the car to never even so much as had a deer run in front of him  Of course the the tree that got in his way pretty well did it in.. Well for the most part, he drove the damn thing a half mile back home with the roof caved and the front bumper rubbing the crank pulley
Dad's 81 Rabbit on the other hand didn't handle it's deer hit so well.
Not making me feel any better

Bad breaks, or where you trying to skid?
I hate deer, they are all over around here.

Needed more stopping power, e-brake helped a bit. The dear ran out about 20-30 feet after an over pass.
Got the damaged parts off, fixed a few bent bits. Started installing replacement parts. the ac condenser actually survived. Had to pull both hood hinges, they were horribly bent out of shape. I got lucky too, the front support actually had a right head light in it, I have 4 spare left lights but no right ones. Looks like i will be able to drive to school monday.

i know GM puts these little whistles on the front of their vehicles.. and they can be bought elsewhere for non GM vehicles as well. for a less than $10 investment, it could very well save you! apparently animals don't like the noise so they scatter. pretty cool!

I had a few sets of those.... They don;t seem to improve the odds much.. Some of those are engineered to scatter the critters, others are engineered to make them stop and look.. As my luck would have the would either stop the damn deer in the middle of the road just as I woudl round a hard turn, or scatter them outta the woods onto the road..

I hit an 11 1/2 point buck with my '80 Rabbit.
He charged me from out of the ditch and the only thing that hit was one of his antlers on my windshield,... just nicked the A-pillar.
The windshield shattered but the laminate held it together and kept the deer from coming through and right into my face.
The A-pillar was lightly damaged but a new windshield was the only repair needed.
Jambed the antler into his brain he didn't even make it off the road.

Is that snow from this year ? We have summer like weather in Michigan now. I hope it holds for a few more days until I get my engine running. My garage is not heated and too full of treasures to allow the car inside to work on.

That's actually from about 4 years ago. No snow here yet but it could come anytime. Was like summer here today too. Great weather for doing some body work on my brother's car.
