rebuild with 30000, safe to run sythetic?
« on: October 26, 2008, 12:57:50 pm »
theres now 30 000 on my rebuild and i have been running rotella diesel oil. its getting into the colder months so i was thinkin of switching over as i need to do an oil change anyway.

my only worrys is i do burn about 3/4 of a liter per 4000 k's      i do drive 1000k's per week all highway doing 115KM/H. I do drive it hard sometimes like if im feelin spunky i will go through the gears and shift at just over 4000 rpm.
Maybe alittle going through my turbo at those high boost levels??

i just dont want to put it in and it leak all out!!!!

anyway should i make the swap, if so can i just put the rotella sythetic in i think its a 0 50 for oil weights that ok????

If your burnin it, id say just stick with the dino oil. No reason to run synthetic if its just gunna turn into fuel. Less crap on the pistons to.

0w50 is a different beast... but good for cold starts. i actually noticed a slight mileage/power drop when the motor was up to operating temp though.

you really need to break that engine in if its burning that much oil.  could be the turbo though...  have you brought the motor all the way to the redline? a few times like that should suffice.  constant speeds are bad and won't properly break in the motor/rings.  rotella actually burns the least of all dino oils i've tried, so if your burning it, its most likely from a leak/blowby.

I noticed this as well. Ran Dello and had some consumption next change used Rotella and the consumption was way down.

I haven't ran it sense the Total Seal rings went in so I can't comment currently but I'll be getting some to see for the next oil change..

Sounds like your not fullly broken in yet.  I belive it took more than 50K miles for my 1.6td to stop using oil.  I think I went to synthetic at 20K miles, and your about there.

I run Delvac 1, or what ever Mobile is calling their 5W40 synthetic diesel oil here in the states.  I'm well over 100K miles, maybe over 150K miles, and my engine uses no oil until 2500 miles, and then it starts to use a little.  At 3000 miles, its down half of a quart.  Thats when I change it.  And I really push this engine hard.  I pulled the head on it last weekend to try a 1.9 head on it, and the bores are beautiful, and there is no ridge at the top of the bore yet.  I have to say that synthic is worth it for me.
