turbo problems
« on: October 25, 2008, 03:22:00 pm »
hi guys, am running an audi 80 1.9 tdi and we think the turbo has gone as there isn't a lot of torque once you get to a set speed. can i fit a bigger turbo as a replacement for more boost and if so any ideas as to which one and from what carbefore i spend the cash on a rebuild.

cheers  phil.

sure its not boost leak? what kind of turbo is on an audi 80 1.9TDI?  i'm guessing you're in Europe as i've never heard of that kind of setup here.  unless you did a conversion.

hi again, not had a chance to check which turbo is on the engine yet as it is in the farm and i am working away at the min. all i can tell you is it is the full engine including the intercooler from an audi 80  made in 1992. i did most of the tune up bits ie opened up the fuel, fitted an electric pump so more fuel,k&n air filter system, bigger exhaust tubin (50mm). engine starts first crack no smoke or breathing from rocker box.upto 40mph its great but no power after about 900rpm.we think turbo has gone but again not had chance for proper look yet but i was trying to find if i could fit a better turbo rather than get this one repaired. if i can't fit an alternative from something else then i will have to repair this one.any help would be grateful.

thanks phil.

if your getting a restriction in fuel flow, that can exhibit the same symptoms.  clogged fuel filter, leaking fuel lines, etc will give you lack of power.  check the easiest first before getting a new turbo

do you have a boost gauge to confirm the lack of boost? VNT-17 or VNT-20 seem to be great upgrades, but not the easiest to retrofit to non VNT applications.

completely changed the fuel system for all new pipework and filter system. even fitted a new electric fuel pump from a 2.5 diesel incase it wasn't getting enough fuel this improved the pick up from start but still no pulling power over these rev figures. not fitted a boost gauge yet that was on the jobs to do list. i spoke to a guy who tunes vw motors and he said it was probably the turbo bearings so again i won,t know till i get the thing off.that should be this weekend all being well.

let you know how i go thanks for help.  phil
