AAZ Glowplug Replacement
« on: October 20, 2008, 02:00:43 pm »
Hi folks,

I will be replacing the glow plugs in my Jetta here in the next few days in preparation for winter. I picked up my parts today (4x Bosch Duraterm, new relay and buss bar) and I have one question... Is it able to be done successfully without removing the injection pump? It looks mighty tight in there!

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Can be done... helps to have a 8mm swivel-socket and narrow fingers.  In some cases you'll need to rotate the pump a bit away from the head to give yourself clearance... I also like to pull the injector hard lines just to give yourself more room... you'll need it.

Others will likely chime in with what works for them... it's not a fun job and everyone has their favorite tricks.

Never done a 1.9L but I have done my share of 1.6's and I have great big meat hands....
THis is what I do with I think the number 1 and 2 glowplugs...3 and 4 I just put in with a deepwell on my 1/4" drive handle...
anyway I take off the injection lines and get the old out. THe new go in by me holding the GP with a magnet and getting it to go in the hole. THen I turn the GP with my wrench until it is started and take the magnet away and finish wrenching. I also have a set up like Vince there with 8 guage wire and terminals instead of the buss bar so I leave the nuts on the GP when installing since putting them on by hand is pretty much impossible for me. With the old buss bar I did it with the trusty magnet.

thats why the TDI glow plugs point upward.. much easier to take out!  and the ALH pump is on a nice slant to stay out of the way

didn't read the whole thread but when i do it on my  1.6td i use wrenches because sockets don' fit too well and a stong magnet to catch the tiny nuts.
getting one of the GPS out is dificult because it backs onto the pump, but with careful jiggling it will go.
dont let your self get too pissed off either because it can be extremely frustrating. To put the nuts back on i use needle nose pliers and push with a finger just to get a 1/4 thread on so the nut doesn't fall.

again, if it does just try and use a strong magnet to get that c*** sucker out from behind the pump.
good luck. GP change with the pump on there IMO is pretty difficult.

I've gone to "pimped" plugs, so I don't need to take the tiny little nuts off anymore. It's so wonderful. :D

I wonder if one of those ratcheting box-end wrenches would be the hot ticket for those hard to reach plugs behind the IP?

Grease is your friend. Stick it on the end of a flathead screw driver, inside a wrench etc and the nuts will stick to it so you can position them. It also can be used to pick up dropped nuts.

You definitly should take off the lines. Take them off as a complete set, not 1 at a time.

Don't throw away the old GPs, they are probably still good. Duraterms last forever. Also, don't overtighten them. That will significantly shorten their life span and you'll be doing this all again in a month or two
