It's a diesel, but I don't think it matters from what I've read of the tranny swap/A1 mounting and shifting hardware. I'm going to have to hold off until I can find a complete linkage and tranny mount to cannibalize. Calling junkyards today.
Rimwise, I could use some so I won't have to wrestle tires on and off rims pre and post winter. I'm checking Venom next!

Already got a turbo motor for the '79 rabbit. I've also got a turbo engine to rebuild for eventual installation into an '82 westy.
Know of a place called "sig's auto repair" on 13 n of the Dells? I'm heading to his place tomorrow to scope out parts.
And I do jump around a bit, but it's only because I'm doing nothing but fixing my cars right now.

Duane,
I got some stuff today from Sig, but I might still need something or another. I'd love a TD 1.9, but I can't afford it at the moment!

with regard to the linkages...
the 4 and 5 speed linkages are not so different - looking at your 4 speed linkage, the vertical rod that rotates about the north/south vehicle axis when moving the stick side to side - this vertical link is controls the across-the-box gear selection.
if you modify this link to be taller (cut and weld in another inch) you can use it no problems.
however, i found that the easiest (and coolest) way to make a 4 speed linkage into a 5-speed one is to flip the bell crank that is bolted to the final drive housing on the gearbox, upside down. this effectively gives you more throw from side to side, so you can easily select 5th gear. also makes for a nice tight feeling box... just be sure to adjust hte linkage splines so that you must still push down to engage reverse.
