A couple random Questions
« on: October 17, 2008, 09:18:37 pm »
What are ways to tell if the water pump isn't working as well as it should or will it just not work anymore? (either on a working car or taken off)

Anyone have suggestions for where to put in an oil cooler? (perhaps where you have yours?) im stumped thinking where to put it in the line (the oil return from the turbo?)

Can you get new "tops" to the injectors and anyone know any prices? (mike  ) I need at least 1 new one (i broke the little excess fuel thingie off   ) an injection place i went to said 75$ just for the part. thats gettin hosed right there isn't it considering prothe sells a whole TD injector for $34USD? for the mean time i have three bleeders coming together with a brass 3 way connector and its very tacky.

dillenger1, you have the same intercooler as i do. Do you know how much psi it can take? it's a Volvo intercooler with fiberglass side panels.

anyone who has lowered their mk2 on coilies have any issues with turning radius or had to do any fender rolling or modifying (i know this isn't the non-engine related section please don't kill me but i may as well limit the number of posts!)

Many thanks for any and all input.
Ed.

What kind of problems are you experiencing?  How old is the pump?  Can you take it off and inspect it?  Give it a spin by hand and see how it feels.  Needless to say, if it doesn't spin freely or it feels crunchy, it's time for a new one.  Then inspect the impeller for wear.  There are a few different impeller types and they are not all created equal.  One has a stamped steel impeller, another uses a cast brass impeller and I'm pretty sure there's a plastic one.  The plastic ones are notorious for wearing down to nothing.

I JB'd it

Cyrus, you're probably right. Mine might be plastic. It was changed a couple (edit: more than a couple actually, more like 4-5 but the car hasn't been used much) years ago by my brother and given the option he would have chosed the plastic one im sure.
What should i expect to pay for a new one? I was weary to order one for $25.

oh right problems.

The expansion tank would over flow and hisses all the time when running and then after its been off long enough to cool down all the hoses are totally limp.
I figured its a head problem. I just did a HG change, twice. The EXP tank is very new and so is the cap.

BTDT.... cleaned it real well (brake cleaner, compressed air), roughed it up with sandpaper and sealed the hole with a small amount of JB Weld.  Became the last injector in the series... no problems !

Bump + does anyone have a thread maybe on vw vortex? about oil cooler install?

Does anyone sell just the injector tops?

I browsed through the search results for "oil cooler"
Mine is pretty small, is it really unadvised to not have a thermo switch to it and just have oil through it all the time?
I figured the rad would do all the cooling/heating and if its not up to temp the thermostat wont open and the oil will be hot enough...

I should have an oil temp gauge + sender too so i can always block he cooler like you would a rad with card board cut outs
