Main bearing question
« on: October 16, 2008, 08:19:00 pm »
Why do new main bearing sets come with an extra bearing with oil groove?  the stock bearings do not have the oil groove's on both sides on any journal, so which one is supposed to get the grooves on both sides?
It was not just a wrong set, they are all like this, and have no explanation as to where to use the grooved bearing's on both sides of journal.
I ended up using another bearing to have it like it was stock since I was not sure. I was thinking it may go in the front, due to timing belt load, allowing for more oil around that bearing?

I believe it goes on #4. Myke w has a write up on it in the faq section on how to make your engine oil better. His write up consisted of buying two sets of bearings so that you could upgrade the #4 main bearing to better oil the head.

I chec ked out the FAQ's for the first time  , should have checked that out a long time ago! Lots of great info, also led me to MikeW's site! I'll be ordering some stuff from him, I think that oil pan baffle set will be a good idea for the samurai since it see's some extreme angles.

I still do not see why the bearing sets come with the extra grooved bearing - or where it is supposed to go.
Has anyone eles run into this? I forget the brand of bearing, may have been Glycol or TRW, I got them at the local import autopart store and all the sets were like this.
Mike's article is about the thrust bearing's.
