wastegate sticking?
« on: June 21, 2005, 03:57:07 pm »
Hello  :D
I *think* the wastegate on my kkk k14 turbo is sticking open slightly, its started only producing about 0.3/0.4 bar rather than the factory 0.7 bar which it did give the day before - the turbo had been sitting for a while so it was the first time the wastegate had moved for several months.

can the wastegate be dismantled and cleaned or lubricated? I've never really looked at it in detail before so I've no idea what parts there are,  I know there is a small nut at the end - what happens when you undo this?

I'm pretty sure its the wastegate thats the problem, but what other things could cause this lack of boost?

cheers

I too had a k14 wastegate that stuck open and could not get it unseized. My dad and I ended up breaking the valve off while trying to free it up and I couldn't find anywhere to get the wastegste seperately  .We ended up sucessfully uncrimping the top can or cover on the wastegate to press the remaining stem out of the assembly then we found an exhaust Valve out of a chevette engine  that had the same stem diameter,so with a lathe we went to work and had a new looking valve for the wastegate .

Anyways If you remove the wastegate from the turbo you might be able to spray it with some penetrating oil and then try to free it up that way.Just dont try to turn the valve  beacuse its brittle and can break off.If that fails you could uncrimp the top cover and try to push the valve downwards. We had very good sucess crimping the cover back on despite it being rusted for over 10 years.Actually now that I thought about it you could possibly just remove that adjusting screw from the cover and get somthing that size to fit in the hole so that you could tap the valve downwards that way.

We found alot of rust  and carbon had been the cause. However this turbo had been sitting for a couple of years as well as the car had been driven by an old lady that probably never allowed the wastegate to function

Hope this helps

Just one more thing to add also,The k14/k24 wastegates are not interchangeable they may look identical from the outside but the valve inside is noticabely different in size.
