Rehab project info request on tranmissions

I would like to find out if someone would be willing to give me some advise on what transmission to go with for my 83 1.6l na rabbit. It currently has the oe 4spd and I would like to know what 5 speeds are out there that would bring the shift points closer and that would be easy to find. Thanks

here is some information, you will have to decide what you want for your car. I know that I have an 83 GTI now and it has a really close ratio...don't know the code, but every gear is 500 rpm from the next...and I hate it in the GTI. It might be great in the diesel, but i doubt it since they have even more torque. The 5 speed that is in my 86 jetta na, soon to be turbo, I love.
I know very  little about the technical aspects of the vw trans. All I know is what I like and don't. Hope this helps.

FF or FN are desired diesel 5 speeds!
GTI close ratio trans are only good for gassers
if ya put a close ratio in a diesel top speed would be 50-55mph
look for trans that have 71 or 75 fifth gear either 3.67 or 3.89 R&P
