How much air coming out of the tube nubbin in the top of the valve cover? IM getting a fair amount of air and some slightly tinted blue air, maybe whitish. Anyway, tracking down another in my escapade. Seems like the number 3 cylinder is burning oil. has new rings, and new valve seals. but there was a little bit of oil in the injector hole after 10 min of running. and i can see a bit of blue haze coming out the tail pipe. Obviously the rings are not 100% seated. could i be getting some oil past the rings?
Got the pump timed though....
Are you sure you have the timing 100% correct? I thought my motor was kaput but I just had it timed way out. I was lazy and did the mark and pray method. Didn't work. Piles and piles of white/blue smoke.
Air coming out of the valve cover is normal, smoke is not. Since it's a fresh rebuild it may just be because the rings aren't seated
It takes a good 5k for the rings to get fully seated.
Usually good to go as far as oil consumption goes after the first 1500 miles.
Pump is set at .0394"
So by the bently thats spot on for a td. granted while testing i am NA but i doubt that matters.
I am hoping its just the rings. I just didnt know how much air and slightly blue (more like a haze) smoke. I will give the rings a chance to seat and see how thing are going
Remind me again how many miles you have on this engine ??
Couple of suggestions:
- Did you try to seat the rings... lots of short but hard pulls with time in between each one for the engine to cool ?
- using a dino oil or synthetic ?
Unknown on the engine.
but the rebuild has 0 miles on it. just a start up and a couple of revs to check for correct pump timing and such.
Using dino for the first 10,000. delo 400, then going to synthetic. that way i can go 40,000 miles between oil changes.....YES I CAN!!!
Got a few morethings to take care of before i do hard pulls.
Did you measure the cyls for roundness before installing new rings? It may take a while if your out of round to seat those rings.
