Hello all. First time poster here, long time reader. Anyhoo, on to my problem

I was recently changing a glow plug on my 1.6td and noticed some gunk buildup around the base of my #4 injector. Upon closer inspection, with the engine running, i can see what looks like bubbles coming out from around the base of the injector. And it looks like its wet around the base of my #3 injector as well.

The idle has been a bit rougher than usuial lately as well. Im not sure if that would be related, or not... Ive done some reading via the old bentley manual, and on the site here about removing injectors. Other than the removal and installation, it doesnt seem like I can do any servicing to them myself. I cannot "pop" test them.

The car has over 300k kms on it, and they have probably never been out. I thought about having them rebuilt locally, but the local diesel shops have been reluctant to work on the VW stuff, or have gave outrageous prices.

Should I just purchase some new ones that are already "set"? or is there another route? I would like to get another 100k kms out of this car (the body is getting rough).

Suggestions welcome....

Did you install new heat shields?

If you remove the injectors the heat-shields need to be replaced (leaking).

The leaking may also cause the rough idle but with 330k on them it sounds like time for a rebuild..

I had one leaking the same way as yours and one that was leaking through the return lines. First check that it is not leaking for the hardline connection, then check the rubber return line, and then try torquing the injector in maybe 1/16 of a turn. That fixed mine and I hope it works with yours.

A bosch tech told me the cause of leaks between the injector halves if do to worn shims. They're not the shims that adjust pop pressure. I think he called them the thrust pins. Anywho, they're pretty easy to switch out.

injectors on that site aren't too expensive, and if you order 4 rebuilt injectors, you won't have to pay for shipping :wink: just return shipping on your old ones.

their site is kinda weird... it only lists the turbo injectors for 1984 rabbits... but that injector should work just fine.

Update: I purchased 4 of the Bosch Reman injectors from the site that jtanguay posted.

Took 2 weeks to reach my door (here in N.W Ontario).

Took my time removing the old ones, alot of back and forth action. No problems encountered. Checked my glow plugs while the injectors were out, and all is ok!

New injectors in - with new heatshields (provided with injectors). Put everything back and tried to fire it up, no go.

Then I realized I might need to rid some air. I cracked the lines at the injectors, until fuel was coming out, then tightened and she fired right up!

Checked for leaks with a flashlight, since it was getting quite dark, saw nothing,but its hard to say since there was some leakage from the bleeding, and there is penetrating lube all over. Will check again tomorrow in the daylight.

Took her for a drive, and WOW!!! What a difference! My jetta feels much smoother in all rev areas. It also seems like I dont have to press as hard on the go pedal to get her going, but time will tell on the fuel milage.

On the negitive side, it does have more / louder "marble on a plate" noise than it did before. Would this mean I am too advanced? I have not checked pump timing, but am hoping to do so soon.

Cant really say if it feels any faster, and the engine was still warm, so its hard to say if its going to start better.

So, to conclude. If you have 300K on original injectors, get new ones or rebuild yours if you havent already. Well worth the money.

some guys say to replace at least the nozzles every 100'000kms. so with 300'000kms you were quite due :lol:

the louder idle is due to advanced timing for sure. ideally you want a retarded idle and then advanced timing when you start to move.

do you have the cold start handle out? that will increase clatter as well... and hopefully you got the 155 bar injectors. the 130 bar will inject slightly earlier giving you advanced timing, unless the static timing is compensated. the number should be stamped on the injector.

now if you think injectors did much, then you need to save up for a Giles pump! :wink:

Yes, they were stamped 155bar.

And a Giles pump would be nice, but there is alot of other stuff I need to do to the car first....

if you want i could do the transaction for you... and ship em to you :wink: but i do believe that theres some sites in the US that are selling the injectors for about the same price anyway.

edit: the price of the canadian dollar might make it worthwhile though.. :roll:
