A good example of terrible compression, cracks deep between valves and shot rings.
Here is my car, it is very broken.
When i start it this happens.
When it's hot it gets better
I thought those pictures were worth a laugh.
I'm building a new one. New head - bored block new pistons and a properly timed IP

Smoke smells of diesel? Tried a set of glow plugs? Smoke smells of burning lubricant? Hmm, not so good.

Do you have a clear fuel line betweeen the filter and injection pump?
If you do;... see any air moving when you first start it?

White smoke can be unburned fuel, especially if its only on startup. We have had trucks with sticking injectors that did this. As mentioned, if this is the cause, you will get a strong diesel smell. Does get rid of mosquitos though.

Andrew, why do you say the bubbles are causing the smoke? :?
Logged
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.
I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

Could be the bubbles but i don't know what to do about that anymore? I replaced everything and it still happens... much less but there are still some sometimes.
that doesn't make any sense to me.
I think it's also:
-two knocking injectors
-very poor IP timing
-very very low compression

I'd look at every junction from the filter to the tank with an eye for anyplace with seepage - it could show where the air is coming from. If none, look in the tank. The air needs to be stopped.

Ahhhhhhhh
Thanks a lot guys. Okay...
This is what i replaced
-fuel filter
-black lines between injectors
-the main seals on the IP including the shaft one (the one that has to be pressed on)
This is what i did... probably not the brightest ideas
-removed the water sperator (my spliced/joined line is very likely the issue i realize now thanks to your kind and wise words)
-i cut the ends of all the fuel lines and put them back on and replaced hose clamps that skipped under slight load
I'm going to make something better to join those two lines. Thanks guys!

True, but if it was sucking air, lots of bubble as he said, I would expect when it sits long enough that the pressure equalized there should be some wetting around the leak.
